    After covering 150,000 nautical miles and visiting 20 countries, Royal Navy survey ship HMS Enterprise has sailed back into her home base of Devonport in Plymouth after nearly three years at sea.

    The vessel was at the heart of operations to prevent people-smuggling in the Mediterranean: she evacuated more than 200 British citizens from Libya, rescued more than 9,000 people crossing the Mediterranean, and destroyed 117 unseaworthy vessels used by people traffickers.

    Commanding Officer Phil Harper said his vessel had "rescued more people in the sea than any other Royal Navy ship in history".

    He said: "Professionalism, bravery and cool nerve, my ship's company have been absolutely magnificent."

    The only Labour MP in Devon and Cornwall says he will "relish the fight" if a snap election called for by Prime Minister Theresa May is approved by Parliament.

    Theresa May has announced plans to call a poll on 8 June. She needs Parliament's backing to hold a vote before the next scheduled date of 2020.

    Exeter's Ben Bradshaw said, external Mrs May was "acting, as always, in the interests of the Conservative Party, rather than those of the country".

    He said: "I shall be campaigning on my record as MP for Exeter and the sole opposition voice to the Conservatives in the Westcountry. It is vital for the health of any democracy to have an effective opposition, particularly at a time when the Conservative Government is pursuing a damaging hard Brexit and our public services are facing their worst crises in a generation."

    A window and doors conman from Hayle, jailed for defrauding elderly victims, insisted on full cash payment before work was carried out, a court heard.

    Magistrates in Truro heard that 36-year-old Liam Hawkins deliberately targeted vulnerable residents, taking cash from them - in one case more than £3,000 - for work he failed to complete.

    The court was also told that he offered no receipts, cooling off period or right to cancel contracts, was unable to complete work agreed to, and would not refund money.

    Hawkins, of Trelissick Road, claimed he was being threatened by a loan shark, his defence counsel said.

    Hawkins was jailed for 38 weeks for three counts of fraud by false representation and ordered to repay more than £4,500 to his victims.

    Back-row Jake Parker and centre Alex Dancer are among five players to leave Championship side Cornish Pirates.

    The pair have been at the club for four seasons, with Parker playing 80 times and Dancer making 61 appearances.

    Former Exeter Chiefs wing Jack Arnott has agreed to join National One side Plymouth Albion, having scored 16 tries in two campaigns at the Mennaye.

    Prop Luke Chapman and Edd Pascoe have also departed, while hooker Rob Elloway announced his retirement in February.

    More than eight tonnes of litter has been collected during a major litter pick along the North Devon Link Road.

    North Devon Council carried out the work over six weeks, along a 34-mile stretch on the A361. More than 1,200 bags were filled with rubbish, including bags of sand, a television, and food and drink packaging.

    The council warned that road users could be given an instant fixed penalty of £75 if they were caught discarding litter on the highway.

    UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced plans to call a snap general election on 8 June. 

    The prime minister needs Parliament's backing to hold a vote before the next scheduled date of 2020. There will be a Commons vote on the proposed election on Wednesday - Labour have said they will vote with the government.

    A 20p price rise is needed on a South West newspaper which has been saved by the co-owner of Truro City Football Club, its new managing director says.

    The Sunday Independent, which covers the West Country's sports scene in depth, will be back on news stands from this weekend with an increased cover price of £1.20. 

    The paper closed two weeks ago soon after the sudden death of its previous owner, Brian Doel. Chairman and co-owner of Truro City Pete Masters has provided backing to rescue the publication.

    New managing director Colin Bradbury said: "We hope that, given the challenges the paper has faced in recent weeks, people will understand the need for this small price rise - the first for nearly a decade - to keep the title alive."

    The new backing saved 17 jobs at the paper's Liskeard headquarters, Mr Masters said. Up to 300 freelancers regularly contribute to the publication, which was founded in 1808.

    Water and air are being tested at a Devon village following complaints of ill health from residents. 

    Some people in Templeton said their symptoms coincided with fumes they believe were coming from a slurry pit next to them.

    The owner of the site said their claims were just not true and that none of the staff working at the unit displayed any of the same alleged symptoms.

    A man has suffered a puncture wound during a serious assault in Plymouth on Easter Sunday, police say.

    Officers were called to Patna Place, off North Road West, after two men were approached and assaulted by two other men between 22:00 and 23:00.

    One man in his 30s was taken to hospital after he "received a puncture wound to his side". His injury was not believed to be life-threatening, officers said, external.

    The Green Party in south Devon has welcomed news that Prime Minister Theresa May wants to hold a snap general election.

    Theresa May has announced plans to call a poll on 8 June. She needs Parliament's backing to hold a vote before the next scheduled date of 2020.

    Dr John Green, chairman of the South Devon Green Party, said: "This election is a perfect opportunity for everyone who is concerned about the direction in which the Conservative government is taking the country to have their say."

    He added: "People want to see a government which reflects their values and is representative of the way in which people vote. We'll be striving to help deliver that."

  20. Man, 20, 'stabbed in back' at Torquay McDonald'spublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    A man from Torquay was treated in hospital after being stabbed during a fight at a McDonald's branch in the town, police say.

    The 20-year-old man "received a stab wound to his back, thought to be from a small knife" during the fight at the Bridge Retail Park at about 01:30 on Monday. The stabbing occurred after a white Ford Fiesta car entered the branch's drive-through "and the occupants began to fight", police said. 

    Officers said the victim left in a different vehicle and "shortly afterwards walked into the A&E department at Torbay District Hospital". He was discharged at about 04:30.

    A 19-year-old man from Newton Abbot has been arrested in connection with the stabbing and on suspicion of another assault with a hammer.

    The car's driver, a 20-year-old male, was arrested for his involvement in the incident, and in connection with other offences. 

    A third man was arrested by officers who later located the car. He was Tasered after he brandished a cleaver at officers.
