    More than 14,000 fans saw Plymouth Argyle promoted yesterday

    A near-capacity crowd at Home Park saw the Pilgrims beat Newport 6-1 to go up to League One. 

    The club have spent six seasons in League Two, missing out in the play-off final last year at Wembley. 

    Argyle chairman James Brent said: "What I was keen for was that we achieved promotion on our own terms and with a big bang. We didn't just get promoted as a consequence of other people's achievements or failure to achieve. It was really a great, great performance and wonderful to watch from an Argyle standpoint."

    The warship returns home after an epic three-year deployment, sailing across the globe.

    The vessel was at the heart of operations to prevent people-smuggling in the Mediterranean. 

    She evacuated more than 200 British citizens from Libya, rescued more than 9,000 people attempting to undertake crossings of the Med, and destroyed 117 unseaworthy vessels used by people traffickers.

    She is due to be deployed again in July.

    Visitors to Charlestown will be able to get much closer to the tall ships and board some of the vessels from today, as the harbourside is opening for the first time to pedestrians.

    To date it's been closed to the public for the exclusive use of trade ships and film companies. Episodes of Poldark and Doctor Who have used the harbour and vessels at the site near St Austell.

    The Shipwreck Centre and Heritage Museum has worked with the owners of the port to offer the new experience.

    It's believed a gorse fire on Exmoor last night was started deliberately. 

    Four fire crews tackled the blaze at Dunkery Hill which spread because of high winds, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said, external

    They fought the fire along a 100m front and brought it under control, but stayed at the scene to damp down hotspots which reignited.

    Pinky and Peanut, two giant gouramis, which live at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium, are moving home. 

    They are going to Portsmouth's aquarium, and will be housed in a bigger tank. 

    The pair were rescued by the aquarium when they outgrew their former home with a member of the public.

    Giant gouramis are a freshwater species native to southeast Asia. They can grow up to 45cm although there are records of them measuring up to 70cm.

    A full scale rescue operation, involving all emergency services was launched on Monday afternoon, external after reports of a person who had fallen over the cliff edge at Land's End.

    Bodmin Town are champions again. They have retained the Cornwall Senior Cup after a 2-1 win over Saltash United.

    Dan Carter scored both goals as Bodmin won the cup for the sixth time in eight seasons.

    A shake-up in senior management is imminent and, behind the scenes, extra finance has had to be arranged. 

    But mining experts said that, on a venture costing £130m, what the mine was experiencing was little more than teething problems.

    A man has been arrested after a hammer attack and a stabbing in Torquay, police say.

    Kingsbridge Police said on Facebook, external, along with officers from across the South Hams, Teignbridge, and Torbay, they were called to an area close to The Willows on Monday to search for a male suspect who attacked someone with a hammer. 

    Police said he was "believed to be in possession of knives" and was also a suspect for a stabbing in Torquay. A stabbing is understood to have occurred at the town's branch of McDonald's in the early hours of Monday. 

    A man was found and arrested in Newton Abbot. He is being held in custody in Torquay Police Station, officers added.

    Twelve fire crews have been tackling a blaze in a thatched house in east Devon. 

    The owner of the property, in Woodmanton, near Woodbury, called them at about 19:30 on Monday, firefighters said, external

    The whole of the thatched roof of the two-storey building was well alight, along with half of the first floor. At one point, firefighters had to leave the building and tackle the blaze from the outside. 

    Four relief crews were called and firefighters have stayed at the scene overnight. 

    By 07:00, firefighters said crews were "making steady progress turning over and damping down".

    Plymouth Argyle have been promoted from League Two in style as they thrashed Newport 6-1 to add to the Welsh club's relegation worries.

    Two goals at the end of the first half from Matty Kennedy and Jake Jervis put the Pilgrims in control before Graham Carey made the win safe. The promotion party was in full swing before Ryan Taylor added a fourth and Kennedy a fifth as the Exiles wilted.

    Jervis scored Plymouth's sixth before Aaron Williams' consolation strike.

    Plymouth's victory keeps alive their hopes of winning the League Two title. The result was Newport's heaviest defeat of the 21st Century.

  19. Person trapped in bungalow blazepublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    A person has suffered burns after being trapped in a bungalow during a fire in Plympton.

    Fire control received a call at 22:00 on Monday reporting smoke coming from the bungalow at Downfield Drive and a person trapped inside. 

    Three fire crews rescued the person, who was suffering from burns and the effect of breathing in smoke. They were given first aid until an ambulance arrived. 

    Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.
