  1. Police officer sacked for sex on duty 'breached professional standards of behaviour'published at 15:15 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    A police officer sacked for repeatedly having sex on duty "had breached the standards of professional behaviour of the police", a Police Misconduct Panel has found.

    The unnamed officer had sex with two women he met during the course of his duties with Devon and Cornwall Police over a two-year period, a private hearing at the force's headquarters in Exeter was told last month.

    The Police Misconduct Panel found the officer breached professional standards, in particular those pertaining to confidentiality, duties and responsibilities, orders and instructions, honesty and integrity and discreditable conduct.

    A statement said: "The officer had breached those duties in 2012-2014, on numerous occasions by engaging in sexual intercourse whilst on duty, including on one occasion with a vulnerable witness."

    He was dismissed immediately.

    A former Plymouth Labour MP says she will not be contesting her former parliamentary seat in the snap general election.

    Alison Seabeck was MP for Devonport from 2005 until 2010 before becoming MP for Plymouth Moorview after boundary changes in 2010. She lost her seat in the 2015 election.

    She tweeted, external that "for deeply personal reasons I have to let you know that I cannot fight the Moor View seat. Fight a strong campaign and win".

    Two owls have had their feet stuck to glue traps in a week in the West Country, the RSPCA says.

    The animal welfare charity said it was warning of the dangers of such traps after the owls had to be rescued in St Columb in Cornwall and in Clapton In Gordano, in North Somerset.

    The traps consist of a sheet of cardboard, plastic or wood coated with non-drying adhesive. They are legal to use for catching rats and mice.

    Both owls were taken to the RSPCA's centre near Taunton in Somerset, where staff have been clearing off the glue with margarine, and helping the birds recover before "they are prepared for release back into the wild".

    A mother whose two-year-old daughter and husband died when they were washed off rocks in Newquay, has told an inquest of the "indescribable pain" she's feeling.

    Lisinda Bruynius was with her husband, Rudy and daughter, McKayla, when the three of them were swept into the sea by a large wave last August.

    She was rescued with minor injuries, but both her husband and daughter drowned.

    Mr Bruynius died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital that night, while McKayla died four days later at Bristol Children's Hospital.

    In a statement read at in inquest in Truro today, Mrs Bruynius said: "Rudy was a loving husband and a wonderful father, he leaves a void which can never be filled. He was our everything, we love and miss him so much.   

    "McKayla, our gorgeous, beautiful baby girl is forever in my heart and the pain myself and the boys feel at losing them both is indescribable."

    A snap general election brings up all sorts of logistical issues across Cornwall; whether that be at schools which may have to close to become polling stations, or finding enough people to work at the counts.

    But if 8 June already sounds a familiar date, that's possibly because it's also the first day of this year's Royal Cornwall Show. 

    Because of this, the ground - the location of many an election or referendum count - will not be available for checking ballots on this occasion, organisers say.

    The deaths of a father and his two-year-old daughter who were washed from rocks while fishing in Newquay were accidental, an inquest has concluded. 

    Rudy Bruynius, 33 and his daughter McKayla died after being swept into the sea off the south end of Fistral Beach last August.

    The inquest at Truro City Hall heard how they had gone fishing, along with McKayla's two sons and her mother.

    They had been fishing at the same spot previously, after it was recommended to Mr Bruynius by a local.

    In a statement read out at the inquest, Mrs Bruynius said the sea appeared to rise by "around 6ft" within five minutes.

    She said: "We didn't have time to react. My sons and I have been left devastated by what happened."

    After a first wave hit them, they were trying to move further up the rocks when they were hit by a second strong wave and three of them were pulled into the water.

    Mr Bruynius died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital later that day. McKayla was transferred to the Bristol Royal Childrens' Hospital where she died four days later.

    Plymouth manager Derek Adams believes his club can compete with bottom-six Scottish Premiership sides when it comes to wages.

    The 41-year-old guided Plymouth to promotion to League One following a 6-1 win over Newport County

    Adams has signed a number of players from Scotland and says his team can continue to attract targets south.

    "Players come because they see it as a stepping stone to a bigger club and to get to the Championship," Adams said. 

    "We couldn't compete at the top end of the Premiership, but we could at the bottom end wage-wise. We've taken a few players from Scotland and they've all done really well for me - [Graham] Carey, [Jake] Jervis."

  16. Isles of Scilly 'going back on generators for more work on repaired mains cable'published at 11:44 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    People in the Isles of Scilly are going to have to temporarily be powered by generators again while remedial works are carried out on a recently repaired 33,000-volt mains cable, Western Power Distribution (WPD) says.

    The 55km cable, the only connection between Scilly and the National Grid, suffered "catastrophic damage" from the anchor of an unidentified boat at the end of February.

    The utilities company chartered a specialist ship to carry out the "challenging" repairs on the cable on the sea bed, about 70m (200ft) down.

    WPD said it was to carry out reinforcement work on the repaired cable to "provide additional protection to the repaired joint and cable" and it could not be used while this work was under way.

    It added that the work was weather-reliant, and a date had not yet been set.

    A dad and his two-year-old daughter died after being swept from rocks into a rapidly changing sea, an inquest has heard.

    Rudy Bruynius, 33, and his daughter, McKayla, died in August last year. They had been fishing from rocks along with three other family members, at the south end of Fistral Beach in Newquay on 19 August 2016. 

    The family were on holiday and had been fishing from the same rocks the day before.

    The inquest, at Truro City Hall, heard the sea rapidly changed and the family was hit by two waves.

    Mr Bruynius died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital later that day. Mckayla Bruynius was transferred to hospital in Bristol but died four days later. His wife and Mckayla's mother, Lisinda, were also swept into the sea but rescued.

    The inquest heard the cause of death was drowning. The hearing continues.
