    A nine-year-old from Cornwall has become one of the youngest people to run a market stall, all in the name of charity.

    Uma Calvert, from Launceston, is following in the footsteps of her dad, who has a shop of his own. She has even had to get her own food hygiene certificate.

    She's raising money for Marie Curie which supports people with a terminal illness. 

    With her dad's help, she has been buying stock from the cash and carry and has public liability insurance.

    Small groups of meerkats, such as those often seen in zoos and safari parks, are at greater risk of chronic stress, new research from the University of Exeter suggests.

    Captive meerkats often live in groups so small that they would be very vulnerable in the wild and, although they are not at risk from predators, being in a larger group might make them feel safer, researchers said, external.

    Living in small enclosures and being constantly exposed to high numbers of human visitors could also increase stress, according to scientists from the university's Penryn Campus.

    The researchers measured stress by looking at hormone levels in the meerkats’ droppings.

    The deadline for Cornwall Airport Newquay to complete its bid to become Britain's first spaceport is the end of this month.

    It's been confirmed four potential partners who'll design and build the space planes have now joined the bid with the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership. 

    However, the companies' names are not being released yet for commercial reasons. 

    Newquay is one of six places in Britain on a government shortlist hoping to run trips into orbit. If successful, they'd operate from the existing airstrip, with Goonhilly Earth Station in charge of mission operations.

    Truro and Falmouth's MP, Sarah Newton, says she doesn't believe her voting to remain in the Brexit referendum will affect her chances of being re-elected.

    Theresa May's plan for a snap general election on 8 June is set to be authorised by MPs later.

    Conservative Mrs Newton, who was first elected in 2010, said: "I think a lot of my constituents have seen that the sky didn't fall in, they are pleased with the Prime Minister and the direction she set out for our country, and just want us to get on and make a success of it."

  8. Inquest resumes into father and daughter swept out to seapublished at 09:42 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    An inquest will resume into the deaths of a father and two-year-old daughter who died after being swept into the sea. 

    Rudy Bruynius and Mckayla were killed in the incident at Fistral beach in Newquay, Cornwall on 19 August when they were caught by a large wave while stood on rocks.

    The RNLI lifeboat, Coastguard helicopter, beach lifeguards, police, air ambulance and ambulance crews attended the scene. 

    Mr Bruynius, a gardener who was originally from South Africa, died in hospital later that night while his daughter died four days later at Bristol Children's Hospital. His wife, Lisinda, and two sons survived the tragedy. 

    The family, who are from Croydon in south London, were holidaying in the Newquay area when the incident happened.

    Use of the drug Spice is so rife at a Devon prison that staff are affected by accidentally inhaling it, the Prison Officers' Association says.

    Serving prison officers in the South West have spoken out over the increasing use of the drug, which simulates the effects of cannabis on the brain.

    Mark Fairhurst, association committee member for the South West, said: "Dartmoor, believe it or not, is a smoke-free prison, and yet they’ve got a lot of instances of Spice being smoked and staff adversely affected by it. They have had numerous examples of staff going off by the effects of inhalation."

    The Prison Service said it was committed to making prisons places of safety and reform, and giving prisoners the support and treatment they needed to help turn their lives around. It added it had taken immediate action by tackling drugs.

    Car regestrations

    Could the European Union flag on driving licences and number plates be replaced with a Cornish or Devon flag? 

    Two Conservative Cornish MPs, Scott Mann and Derek Thomas, hope so. In a Commons debate today, they'll support plans to replace the EU banner with the distinctive Cornish black flag or other regional symbols after Brexit.

    Under current laws, it's illegal to do so on licences or plates.

    The Department for Transport said: "Until exit negotiations are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the EU and all the rights and obligations of EU membership remain in force."

    A police officer has been sacked for repeatedly having sex on duty over a two-year period.

    The unnamed officer had sex with two women he met during the course of his duties with Devon and Cornwall Police.

    A private hearing was held at the force's headquarters in Exeter last month. It was told how, on one occasion, he had sex with a vulnerable witness whilst on duty.

    He also gave out confidential information and was dismissed for gross misconduct and breaching confidentiality, it heard.

    A woman has been left with potentially life-threatening injuries from a serious road collision in Cornwall, police say.

    Three vehicles - a car towing a caravan, a lorry and another car - collided on the A39 between Wadebridge and Winnards Perch at about 14:30 on Tuesday.

    Police said, external it appeared that the car towing the caravan turned across the path of the lorry, which was travelling in the opposite direction. The second car, following the first, then collided with the other two vehicles.

    The woman, a passenger in the car towing the caravan, was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth after the crash outside the Halfway House Inn at St Jidgey. The car's driver, a 57-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. 

    The lorry driver suffered no physical injury and a 69-year-old local man in the second car suffered minor injuries. The road was closed for six-and-a-half hours for a police investigation.

    Serving prison officers in the South West have spoken out over what they say is a daily threat of attack due to overcrowding and the increasing use of a drug called Spice.

    Latest official figures acknowledge that Portland's Young Offenders' Institute has too many inmates to endure a "decent standard of accommodation". Some officers said the levels of violence were the worst they'd ever known.

    In Devon, Channings Wood Prison, near Newton Abbot, is having issues with what the service calls "throwovers" - when drugs are thrown over the wall. There are problems in Dartmoor too (pictured).

    The Prison Service said it was committed to making prisons places of safety and reform, and giving prisoners the support and treatment they needed to help turn their lives around. It added it had taken immediate action by tackling the drugs, drones and phones that undermine security.
