    Plymouth's Central Park is to have more than £2.5m worth of improvements. 

    The work, which will take two years to complete, includes improving pathways and boundaries, a new cafe, changing rooms and improved sports pitches, . 

    The cash is coming from Plymouth City Council's capital programme, plus developer contributions.

    Devon and Cornwall Police have issued advice to members of the public who find dogs shut in cars, saying the course of action depends on the level of distress. 

    It follows the case of a man who broke a car window to reach a dog left in a car in St Ives. His actions went viral on social media (see below). 

    In a statement, police said it was not advisable to force entry to a vehicle unless people were certain of their ground and unless they were prepared to defend their actions at court. 

    Officers said the first step should be to call the police on non-emergency number, 101.

    Architects have been appointed to repair and rebuild the Royal Clarence Hotel in Exeter, which was destroyed by a fire last October, its owner says.

    The hotel, which was described as the oldest hotel in England, had to be demolished after the fire broke out in buildings on Cathedral Green before spreading to the Grade II listed hotel, which dated back to 1769.  

    Owner Andrew Brownsword Hotels said Manchester-based firm Buttress would carry out the work with an intention to "preserve surviving features of historic and architectural importance and, where possible, incorporate them into the rebuild".

    Call operators in Cornwall who sent a North Yorkshire fire crew to the wrong address have been cleared of blame.

    The Harrogate crew was wrongly sent two-and-a-half miles from where it should have been by Cornwall operators 400 miles away.

    But an investigation found the 999 call had dropped out before the operator could get all the details. 

    North Yorkshire and Cornwall fire and rescue services share control room operations at peak periods.

    The carcass of a large basking shark being washed up near a beach in Cornwall has been a "rare opportunity" to study the species, a strandings expert says.

    The creature, estimated as 25ft (7.62m) long, came ashore at Chapel Point, near Mevagissey, over the weekend. The sharks are often seen off the Cornish coast during the warmer months. 

    A team of volunteers working for the Marine Strandings Network (MSN) is at the site, gathering samples, as well as confirming the species, size and gender.   

    Niki Clear, from the MSN, said: "Basking shark carcasses normally sink, so this is a very rare opportunity for us. It's really unusual, we get maybe one a year."

    A huge barrel jellyfish has been filmed swimming underneath a paddle boarder in Cornwall. 

    The creature was one of several seen in clear waters near Port Isaac in Cornwall on Friday 21 April.

    Ben Spicer from Cornish Rock Tors Ltd was out on the water when he spotted the creature, which are the largest in UK waters. 

    He said: "They're awesome and harmless to humans, feeding mainly on plankton. 

    "They drift in with the currents and are very easy to spot in clear conditions due to their size."

    A parish councillor says he understands why a local lord does not want telegraph poles on his land to get local superfast broadband to a village, but added there were already "poles everywhere".

    Most of the work to connect Upton Pyne, near Exeter, has already been done. But the project has been delayed after BT and the 5th Earl of Iddesleigh failed to agree on whether poles could be used across his land. The earl said he would prefer cables buried underground as poles would ruin an "unspoilt valley" on his estate.

    Councillor Bob Short, of Upton Pyne and Cowley Parish Council (pictured), said: "In the interests of keeping the countryside looking pretty for everybody, nobody wants poles. 

    "But it's the case that they'd not be the only ones in the area: there are poles everywhere. Surely four more isn’t going to be too much of an inconvenience for the countryside?"

    The earl insisted that he had not ruled out allowing poles to be put in.

    Firefighters have tackled a gorse fire on Bodmin Moor.

    Six firefighters in one appliance from Bodmin where called to near Dozmary Pool at about 09:20.

    They used beaters and a hose reel to extinguish the blaze, which spread across about 20 sq-m of gorse, the fire service said.

    A fire in a commercial bin which spread to a neighbouring metal storage container in Dawlish was started deliberately, firefighters say, external.

    Emergency crews were called to the scene behind a property in High Street at about 01:10. 

    The 6m by 2m storage container, which had shop fittings inside, was destroyed in the blaze. The fire also damaged the rear light of a nearby car, Devon and Somerset Fire Service said.

    The lord at the centre of a row over telegraph poles which is currently leaving a village without superfast broadband says he would prefer any cabling necessary to be underground.

    A bogus travel agent who swindled people out of a total of £130,000 did provide some holidays but used money from new victims to try to honour promises made to previous ones, a court heard.

    Susan Lee got families to pay up to £8,500 in advance for holidays and then gave excuses when they called her to ask for confirmations of their bookings, Exeter Crown Court was told.

    Mr David Sapiecha, prosecuting, told the court there were 13 victims who lost a total of £130,000, although £40,000 had been repaid from money paid by later customers. He said it was a "sophisticated fraud which continued over a number of years with a large number of victims".

    Fifty-nine-year-old Lee, of Leaze Park, Okehampton, admitted fraud and was jailed for two years.

    An 81-year-old pedestrian has suffered serious injuries in a road crash in Torquay, police say.

    Officers said, external the woman was walking across St Marychurch Road at about 12:20 on Saturday when she was struck by a red Ford Fiesta ST.

    She was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where she is still undergoing treatment.

    Police, who closed the road for six hours for an investigation, have appealed for witnesses to the crash or anyone "who saw the vehicle or pedestrian prior to the incident".

    Plymouth Raiders missed out on the British Basketball League play-offs for the fourth season running after suffering defeats by Surrey and Manchester over the weekend.

    Johnny White's side have finished the season, having reached the final of the BBL Trophy last month.

    Since losing that match in Glasgow, Raiders have won just twice, ending the season with six consecutive losses.
