  1. Firefighter sustains minor injuries in Falmouth crane collapsepublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    A firefighter has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after a crane collapsed at Falmouth docks this morning. 

    The crane fell onto acetylene gas cylinders, which were damaged and started leaking. 

    Firefighters from Truro and Falmouth were called to assess the cylinders to see whether there was any heating or risk of explosion. 

    Cornwall Council said a firefighter was taken to hospital for a precautionary check. 

    The Council said a cordon around the scene has been removed and the investigation has been handed over to the docks' management.

    Cornish cyclist Chris Opie has won round one of the Tour Series event in Redditch.

    The 29-year-old Truro-born road racer, who rides for the Bike Channel–Canyon team, also recorded the fastest lap on his way to victory.

    The Tour Series is made up of 10 races, with the next taking place in Stoke on Thursday.

    We've got reports coming in of a fire in Exmouth this lunchtime.

    Rolle Street is currently closed due to a blaze around the Tower Street area of the town.

    It's believed crews are currently on the scene, but that the fire is small and being brought under control.

    The chief executive of a housing association that has come under fire from residents over plans to redevelop 1960s bungalows says residents have been offered flats in the new development.

    Steve Prime, chief executive of South Devon Rural, said the bungalows near Totnes in Devon were "tiny and poorly insulated" and "totally unsuitable" for the elderly residents.

    All the previous residents have been rehoused and five of the remaining long term residents include two women in their 90s.

    Two others on short term tenancies were "being helped" with finding accommodation. 

    "I understand people's concerns, but we have an excellent scheme that's 63% affordable," he said.

    "There are 12 flats in two blocks and I don't know that urbanises anything.

    "It provides valuable, affordable, residential accommodation."

    A Police and Crime Commissioner who was urged to stand aside over police investigations says she is "delighted" the Crown Prosecution Service has decided to take no further action against her. 

    Officers were examining Alison Hernandez's role in submitting expenses for Tory MP Kevin Foster in the 2015 General Election.

    Ms Hernandez said: "I am delighted that the Crown Prosecution Service has decided to take no further action against me following the police investigation into spending at the 2015 general election.

    "It is now two years on from these events and I am pleased that the shadow of the investigation has now been removed.

    "My political opponents have regularly called for me to stand down over the past year but I have been determined not to let the investigation affect the way that I carry out my duties as police and crime commissioner."

    Exeter City has confirmed that work on their new £3.5m ground improvements will begin next month.

    The scheme includes replacing the current 90-year-old stand and improvements to the away end, as well as the building of student accommodation behind the home terrace.

    The capacity at St James Park will remain the same, but will reduce from 8,691 to approximately 6,000 during the construction period.

    "This has been a drawn out and complicated process. But none of it would have been possible without the brilliant unwavering support and backing that the club has received," said Exeter chairman Julian Tagg.

    The docks at Falmouth remain deserted after a crane collapsed earlier this morning.

    Sarah Lucy, who lives on Cliff Road in Falmouth, said: "I got woken up by this almighty crashing and rumbling sound.

    "Immediately the air raid siren started and then there were loads of sirens.

    "All the roads are closed now and there are police everywhere."

    No Conservative politicians or officials will currently face charges for breaches of expenses rules during the 2015 general election.

    The Crown Prosecution Service said it had examined evidence from 14 police forces in England but it did not "meet the test" for further action.

    Fire services say the crane that collapsed at Falmouth Docks earlier this morning fell onto acetylene cylinders.

    Firefighters from Falmouth and Truro are on site at the docks, and have used breathing apparatus sets to isolate the leak and make the area safe.

    There are still no reports of any injuries.

    All dockyard staff have been temporarily evacuated says the shipyard firm A&P Falmouth.

    It follows the collapse of a crane at the site.

    Emma Parker-Goff, from the company, said: "No one was injured in the incident however all personnel have been temporarily evacuated from the docks whilst an assessment of the area is made.

    "A full health and safety investigation will take place. Personnel will return to work as soon as possible."

    The man who came up with sixpenny paperbacks and founded Penguin Books is being honoured in Exeter today. 

    Sir Allen Lane is being commemorated with a distinctive orange plaque at St David's railway station. 

    It's the spot where, in 1934, he conceived publishing books which would be available to all at low prices.

    A decision on plans to build 24 new homes to replace 1960s bungalows will be made today.

    The Brimhay bungalows at Dartington were built for retired people and could be replaced by 12 rented flats and 12 houses for sale.

    Seven elderly people are battling the plans from owners South Devon Rural (SDR) housing association.

    Nicholas Willoughby, 67, said: "Joan my next door neighbour is in her 90s and her family have lived in Dartington for generations. 

    "When the people from SDR came to issue their warnings that they were evicting us and she was white as a sheet."
