The University of Plymouth has confirmed that its new nurse education facility, The Exeter School of Nursing, external, will be opening on Topsham Road in Exeter.

First-year BSc Adult Nursing students will use the site in September.

It will be using existing buildings.

Professor Bridie Kent, head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Plymouth, said: "It’s great that we’re moving into an existing education site, rather than building something new.

“It was also key for us to find somewhere that was central, to help reduce the need for students to travel and cut the associated time and costs of travelling – which will particularly support our students who have caring responsibilities."

Police officers have been demonstrating the new twin cartridge Tasers that are going to be rolled out across Devon and Cornwall.

Ch Supt Jim Nye said: "Devon and Cornwall Police maintain and enforce high standards of officers carrying a Taser. Experienced officers are carefully selected to carry a Taser and have to undertake a rigorous pass or fail course."

Charred wooden beams damaged when Exeter's Royal Clarence hotel burned down last year have been salvaged to form a work of art.

The 4m high sculpture by Martin Staniforth is entitled Hope and Renewal.

He said: "It's such a tragic story, such a disaster that we've lost this amazing building from the heart of our city.

"This is some sort of small good news story off setting that huge disaster."

It's going on public display from tomorrow on Cathedral Green as part of Exeter Art Week.

Clinicians and charities say sending mental health patients away from their home area for acute care is detrimental to their treatment.

New NHS figures show that dozens of patients from Devon and Cornwall have been moved more than 100km between December 2016 and February of this year.

Dr Ranga Rao, the Royal College of Psychiatrists' national lead for acute in-patient care, said: "Inevitably, recovery takes longer during out-of-area care because people are away from their home, and don't have access to their friends and family.

"It can't in any way be beneficial to your recovery."

Plymouth Argyle will return to East Holland for their pre-season tour ahead of the League One campaign, which starts in August.

The Pilgrims will play games against an FC Twente side and FC Emmen on the trip, while their only home friendly will be against Championship side Cardiff on 21 July.

Devon and Cornwall Police are changing the type of Tasers they are using, and training more officers to use them.

After authorisation from the Home Office, they are switching to twin cartridge devices over the next 18 months.

Ops Commander for Devon and Cornwall Police & Dorset Police, Ch Supt Jim Nye said: "Alongside this conversion, Devon and Cornwall Police intends to increase the number of officers trained to carry Taser up to 1,200 by September 2019.

"This represents around 85% of the regular, uniformed front line officers (excluding PCSOs & Special Constables); about 41% of total officer strength."

Low cloud and fog means that flights from Exeter, Newquay and Land's End to Scilly have been put on hold this morning.

Trading Standards and police officers are heading for Devon, to highlight the dangers of rogue traders and forceful doorstep sellers.

It's part of Operation Liberal which targets distraction burglaries and doorstep crime.

Information stands will be set up in Seaton and Budleigh Salterton. They will also be at the Devon County Show next weekend.

Paul Thomas, the Head of Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service, said: "Rogue Traders are a blight on communities and make people’s lives a misery.

"They use high pressure sales techniques to take advantage of householders, especially the vulnerable.

"We will not tolerate such dishonest trading practices and we will continue to work closely with the Police, through intelligence sharing and joint initiatives, to enable us to protect our residents and legitimate local businesses."

Police say a man in his 20s died after his car hit a parked lorry overnight between Newton Abbot and Drum Bridges.

There are queues on the A38 back to Ashburton. A diversion is in place but is also very busy.

Police say their investigation work is likely to last some time.

Tributes are being paid to a 23-year-old woman who died after falling from a horse on Dartmoor.

Amy-Jane White from Plympton was killed in what her mother called a "very serious accident" on Monday.

Amanda White said on Facebook her daughter suffered the accident at Yelverton and "unfortunately she has passed away".

Her boyfriend of 15 months, Daniel Huggins, said: "I have lost a lover, friend and soulmate. 

"She died doing her greatest love in her life, riding horses," said the 31-year-old.

A man in his late 20s has died in an accident on the A38 near Newton Abbot overnight.

Devon and Cornwall Police say a car hit a parked lorry and went into a hedge at 02:50.

Police and ambulance went to the scene where the driver was found unconscious, and died shortly afterwards.

His next of kin have not yet been informed.

Police set up an Exeter-bound road closure from Goodstone junction and put diversions in place.

They say at about 07:45 the road was partially opened.

The police say it will make both officers and the public safer.

The force will see twin cartridge tasers introduced, which allow officers to fire them twice if needed.

The Taser means an officer can incapacitate a violent suspect from a distance without having to resort to firearms, but their use remains controversial.

The human rights group Amnesty say it’s been linked to hundreds of deaths in America, and shouldn’t become the default way for police to deal with a confrontation.
