    A parrot and a elderly couple were left trapped in a car after their vehicle ended up in a ditch in North Devon earlier today.

    Fire crews were called to Holsworthy after the trio couldn't leave the vehicle, said Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

    The couple and the parrot were not injured.

    Veterans in Devon, who are recovering from drug and alcohol problems, have been making some of the poppies for the tribute being created at this year's Devon County Show.

    The percussion caps from old shotgun cartridges are being used to make the unique metal poppies.

    They will form part of the "Devon Remembers" memorial, to commemorate those from the county who lost their lives in World War One.

    Those involved say using old cartridges in the poppies is very symbolic.

    A woman has died after her car careered into a lake following a crash.

    It's understood the driver was trapped in the car, in the water, for 25 minutes.

    The car was only spotted after a driver of another vehicle saw it in the lake.

    The woman's car left the road - which takes motorists around the body of water.

    Emergency services pulled the woman from the vehicle and she was taken to hospital, where she died.

    The woman is yet to be named.

    Firearms police officers in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall are to be issued with body-worn video cameras following a successful trial, the forces have said.

    The equipment is being given to 270 officers and is part of plans to boost accountability.

    "The technology offers greater transparency for those in front of the camera as well as behind it," police said.

    A woman and her dog were rescued by the RNLI in Newquay on Saturday after being trapped by the incoming tide.

    Lifeboat operations manager Gareth Horner said: "Cooper the Boxer was no trouble at all and seemed fairly unfazed by his impromptu ride in the lifeboat."

    The RNLI said the woman later returned to the station with a thank you card, a donation and provisions which were "greatly appreciated".

    The charity urged people to check tide times before venturing along the coast.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman died after her car left the road and ended up in Stithians Lake last night.

    The woman who had been driving a silver Ford Fiesta was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital where she died.

    Officers say no-one else was involved and it's still unclear what happened before the car ended up in the water just before 21:00.

    Bev Borman lives nearby and said she only realised something had happened when the lights of the emergency vehicles appeared.

    Police have arrested 11 people after a "serious disorder" between football fans.

    On Good Friday Plymouth Argyle played an away match at Portsmouth, whilst Exeter City played at home to Barnet. In the evening, fans from Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle were involved in an incident in Exeter, police said.

    Following the arrests seven people have been bailed and four released under investigation.

    Sgt Vicky Howell said: “Football violence will not be tolerated. Our work will continue around safeguarding and we will take a robust approach to disorder through the criminal justice system in the application of Football Banning Orders to support this vision.

    "Please do not risk a criminal record and a potential banning order by committing offences.”

    Large families and strong social ties help animals live longer, new research from the University of Exeter suggests.

    In a study of female rhesus macaques, a species of small monkey, scientists found those with many close female relatives have better life expectancy.

    However, the effect fades with age - suggesting older females learn how to "navigate the social landscape" and have less need for social ties.

    Dr Lauren Brent from the university said: "Our study supports the idea that social ties promote survival.

    "This adds to a small but growing body of research that helps to explain why animals are social."

  11. Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust no longer on 'black alert'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    The chief executive of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has thanked staff for bringing services out of a high level of alert.

    It follows a long period with staff coping with increasing demand for NHS services.

    Previously the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust was on a "black alert" or operational pressures escalation level, external (OPEL) four, the highest level.

    This is achieved when it is judged that "pressures in the local health and social care system continues to escalate leaving organisations unable to deliver comprehensive care".

    The hospitals are now on green status, the lowest level.

    Hospital boss Kathy Byrne took to social media to congratulate staff.

    The Swedish furniture giant Ikea has marked the next step towards opening in Devon next year with a ground breaking ceremony today.

    The Exeter branch will be the 21st store in the UK chain and is scheduled to open its doors in April 2018 at a location east of the city by the M5.

    The family of a "beloved" father of three who died after falling on a Snowdonia mountain say they are "shocked and devastated".

    Father-of-three John Wynne, 61, from Exmouth, was head of finance at Exeter-based investment managers Hawskmoor which called him "universally popular". 

    Mr Wynne was with his 23-year-old daughter when he fell while descending Tryfan near Capel Curig. 

    He had worked in the finance sector in Bermuda, Ireland and the UK. 

    His family said in a statement that Mr Wynne, originally from Carlow, Ireland, "adored his family" and had been enjoying a weekend walking in Snowdonia. 

    "We are so thankful for all the prayers, love and support from wonderful family and friends who are also feeling such a great loss," they said.
