    A man who was rescued from a major blaze in Torquay last week has died, police have confirmed.

    The victim was transferred to a specialist burns unit at a Swansea hospital after the fire on Fore Street on 9 May.

    About a dozen residents had to be evacuated from a number of properties in the street and 40 firefighters tackled the blaze. 

    The street remains cordoned off because of the "dangerous state of the buildings".

    A police spokeswoman confirmed that the victim, who suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation, had died.

    A woman has died following a single car crash at Hillside near Stithians Lake, Cornwall.

    Emergency services were called at about 20:50 on Tuesday following reports of the crash and that the vehicle had entered the lake. The female driver was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

    Police closed the road for five-and-a-half hours while a specialist forensic examination of the scene was carried out. 

    Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

As a result of the collision the vehicle entered the water of the lake. The driver was conveyed to the Royal Cornwall Hospital where they died.     New rules will force property developers who want to create houses of multiple occupancy in Falmouth to apply for formal planning permission.

    It follows protests last summer over the level of student accommodation in the town.

    The town council took the decision to impose the new rules with the aim of making it easier for local residents to secure long-term lets.

    Previously landlords could create houses of multiple occupancy without going through the planning department.    

    Falmouth University said it is supporting efforts to restrict the number of properties converted into student accommodation.

    A driver has died after a car ended up in a Cornish lake. Police say the vehicle ended up into the water at Stithians, after a crash at Carnmenellis.

    One person was rushed to the Royal Cornwall Hospital after the collision on Tuesday night, but doctors could not save them.

    Police have not confirmed whether it was a man or a woman and say officers are in the process of telling their next of kin.

    Police have said they are "increasingly concerned" for a man who went missing last night.

    Martin Lewis, 45, was last seen at midnight in the Rippon Tor area of Bickington, Newton Abbot.

    Mr Lewis is believed to have been going to the Haytor area of Dartmoor.

    He is described as white, 6ft (1.8m) tall, of average build and with dark blonde hair.

    A car driver has died after the vehicle careered into a lake following a crash.

    Police said the car left the road at Hillside near Stithians Lake on Tuesday night.

    A spokeswoman said police received a call at 20:53 BST to the collision involving a Ford Fiesta and no other vehicles.

    "As a result of the collision the car entered the water of the lake," she said.

    "The driver was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital where they were pronounced deceased". It's not clear what the car crashed into before ending up in the lake.

    Legal challenges are being launched against plans to close inpatient beds at community hospitals in Devon.

    Commissioners voted in March to halve the number of inpatient beds in mid and east Devon and instead improve care for people at home. 

    Two separate applications are being made for judicial reviews into that decision by the Royal College of Nursing and campaigners in Honiton.

    Northern Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group has said no beds will close until they have been assured it is safe to do so.
