    Local Live

    Truro Co-op

The death of a man after he slipped on water that leaked from a faulty sandwich chiller in a Truro shop "demonstrates the importance of slip risks being adequately controlled", Cornwall Council says.

The Co-op has been fined £400,000 over the death of 74-year-old Stanley May, who died after hitting his head on the floor in the Co-op supermarket in Truro in July 2015.

The only control method was a "wet floor" sign, the council said.

The Co-operative Group Ltd, which previously pleaded guilty of failing to protect customers under health and safety law, said the death was "a matter of utmost regret". It was also ordered to pay costs of £50,000.

Sarah-Jane Brown, from the council's Business Regulatory Support team, said: "It should serve a warning to the retail industry, and particularly supermarkets, that signage alone is not an adequate control. Proactive measures must be taken to either prevent floors becoming slippery or precluding public access."

  11. Digger driver warned 'I will tear the place up'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

A digger driver caused more than £100,000 damage on a building site he had worked on after saying "I swear blind I will come back and tear the place up", a court heard.

Forty-one-year-old Rory Doyle's wrecking spree included him damaging a road, demolishing a lamp post and digging up drains on the site at Chivenor Cross, near Braunton, in April 2016.

Exeter Crown Court heard he was angry because he had been sacked over a dispute with his foreman, who he accused of bullying him. The total cost of the spree included a £22,000 penalty payment the contractors incurred for overrunning, it was also told.

Doyle, of Waterloo Road, Torquay, admitted criminal damage and was jailed for 18 months, suspended for two years. Defending, Greg Richardson, said Doyle was a hard-working man and the only breadwinner for his family who would suffer if he went to jail.

It was taken to a vet "who sadly found that the injuries were too severe to make a recovery", the charity said. "The bird was put to sleep to prevent further suffering", it added.

Animal Collection Officer Peter Ferris said: “It’s a sad thought that somebody would shoot an animal for no reason and just leave it to suffer."

All wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is illegal - except under licence - to take, injure or kill wild birds or interfere with their nest or eggs.
