    A review into Devon's hospital services has recommended that emergency departments, maternity, paediatrics, stroke and neonatal care remain at all four of the county's main hospitals - in Barnstaple, Exeter, Plymouth and Torquay - but warns of "huge challenges" ahead for the NHS.

    Demand for health services in Devon has risen by 50% in a decade, according to the Acute Services Review, published today.

    Despite difficulty in finances, staffing and meeting demand for some of the services under threat, the review recommends that they stay open - but with hospitals working more closely.

    Thousands of people joined a campaign to save services in the county after it was revealed that some were under threat.

    Sprinklers could be fitted at a social housing tower block in St Austell after concerns were raised following the Grenfell fire.

    Managers from Ocean Housing and Cornwall Fire Service have met residents of the 12-storey Park House building to reassure them over the safety systems in place.

    Cornwall Council said the building fully complied with current safety regulations, with each apartment designed to contain a fire.

    Ocean Housing said it would consider a sprinkler system.

    Public Health England and the NHS admit that most of us welcome it, but when it's too hot for too long there are health risks, external.

    They say the main risks posed by a heatwave are:

    A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people are:

    • Older people, especially those over 75
    • Babies and young children
    • People with a serious chronic condition, especially heart or breathing problems
    • People with mobility problems – for example, people with Parkinson's disease or who have had a stroke
    • People with serious mental health problems
    • People on certain medications, including those that affect sweating and temperature control
    • People who misuse alcohol or drugs
    • People who are physically active – for example, labourers or those doing sports

    Torbay Council says it is working closely with waste collectors to "resolve the issue of inconsistent waste collections" across the district.

    The authority admitted, external there had been "ongoing difficulties experienced by residents" with collectors, and it was working with TOR2 - the partnership between the council and Kier Group - to "return the service to a normal pattern of collections".

    Devon and Cornwall Police officers are to provide reassurance to Muslim communities in the counties by visiting mosques, Islamic centres and other locations in response to the Finsbury Park attack in London.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of terror offences after he drove a van into a group of worshippers close to the north London mosque.

    ACC Middleton said: "Although there is no specific intelligence to suggest any threat to our force area, officers will be providing reassurance.

    He added: "We have good relationships with all of our communities and we are liaising with them to make sure that everyone feels safe and to talk through any concerns. We take all reports of hate crime seriously and take positive action."

    The release of a pair of beavers last week on farmland near Truro in an effort to help prevent flooding in a village "was one of the best days of my life", a farm owner says.

    The male and female European beavers were reintroduced to a five-acre enclosed area on Woodland Valley Farm on Friday in an effort to help prevent flooding in the village of Ladock, Cornwall Wildlife Trust said, external.

    It's hoped their dam building will help slow the flow of water during periods of heavy rain, stopping water getting into residential areas. The trust added that the pair would not be running loose, and that there should be no impact on the wider countryside.

    Farm owner Chris Jones said: "The beavers seemed to be enjoying exploring their new home."

    The University of Exeter is also closely monitoring and studying the impacts of the pair.

    University of Exeter archaeologists and local volunteers have been working on and off in the Ipplepen area for the last six years, and have been unearthing new evidence showing how people made their living more than 1,300 years ago.

    The meeting is to address the concerns of residents in Cornwall's only high-rise tower block in St Austell after the Grenfell Tower in London earlier this week.

    In 2014, a fire broke out on the ninth floor of the 12-storey block in St Austell, which saw 11 fire engines called to the scene.

    Fortunately there were no reports of injuries among residents who were evacuated from the flats in that blaze.

    Animals at Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts in Torquay aren’t being troubled by the soaring temperatures, as many or able to either relax by the pool or have ice lollies, staff say.

    During hot weather, zoo animals have access to indoor and outdoor shade and plenty of fresh water, the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust said.

    It added that Paignton Zoo was "a leafy place with lots of shade", while Living Coasts had sea breezes.

    Trust spokesman Phil Knowling said: "Most zoo animals come from warmer climates, but actually all animals are very adaptable to our weather variations – they’re far more adaptable than we are."

    As you can see here, the zoos' staff have had some novel ways of making sure the animals are kept cool over the years.
