    Cornwall's cricketers battled last night to avoid a two-day defeat in their Unicorns Counties Championship game with Cheshire at Nantwich.

    Cheshire were bowled out for exactly 400 to give a big lead of 192 runs on first innings.

    Cornwall then slid to 71 for five before Adrian Noott and Adam Hodgson put on an unbroken 95 for the sixth wicket. Noott, who spent the entire exceptionally hot day on the pitch, is 70 not out.

    Cornwall are 166 for five and still trail by 26 runs going into today's final day. Play continues at 11:00.

    Concerns have been raised by teachers and parents that a new free school in Launceston could force neighbouring village schools to close.

    Cornwall Council said it was committed to providing 2,400 new school places by September 2018, with a series of schools in the county - including primaries in Newquay, St Austell, Bodmin, Wadebridge, Helston, Saltash and Redruth - at nearly 100% capacity.

    Launceston College's chief executive, Jack Jackson, made the bid for the new free school to the government. He said he believed it was "highly unlikely" problems would be caused elsewhere.

    Firefighters from Penzance and Hayle were called to a series of bin blazes last night, including one at the base of a multi-storey building.

    It's reported local people had to drag a bin away from the five-storey Royal Court block of flats in Penzance after the fire broke out at about 23:10.

    Archaeologists working in south Devon have unearthed new evidence showing how people made their living more than 1,300 years ago.

    University of Exeter archaeologists and local volunteers have been working on and off in the Ipplepen area over the last six years.

    More recently, they say they've discovered that people lived there for much longer than originally thought, and they've got a better insight into the way they worked.
