Cornwall’s proposed Spaceport could be one step closer after the introduction of a Space Industry Bill.

The bill, which was announced as part of the Queen’s Speech, will introduce new powers to allow launches from British soil.

It will licence new commercial spaceflight technologies, including spaceplanes and satellite launch systems, and create a regulatory framework for the operation of UK spaceports.

Spaceport director Miles Carden said: “We are determined that Cornwall will play an important role in the development of commercial space launch by offering safe and low-cost access to space from Newquay, with spacecraft tracking and communications facilities from Goonhilly.

“The next step in our Spaceport Cornwall bid will be presenting our plans to the UK Space Agency alongside our commercial partners, and we expect that to happen in a matter of weeks.”

Police in Newquay say they executed drugs warrants simultaneously in a housing estate "as a result of community concerns over the supply and use of controlled drugs".

One man was arrested after officers executed three warrants on the Mayfield estate on Tuesday.

A quantity of suspected Class A and B drugs were seized during searches of properties in Hawkins Road, Mayfield Crescent and Trelawney Road, officers said.

Inspector Dave Meredith said the work was "sending a clear and robust message to persons involved in the supply and use of controlled drugs in Newquay".

A police officer in Plymouth has taken to Twitter to warn dog owners about the risks of keeping dogs inside vehicles on hot days.

The family of a man whose life was saved by a fundraising campaign say they are "truly grateful" to more than 1,700 people who paid for his return to the UK after he was shot during a robbery at his parents' restaurant in Antigua.

Thirty-seven-year-old Christopher Tester (picture here during a recent family wedding), from Torquay, was wounded on Christmas Day while trying to "shield his mother". He was flown back to Devon for treatment in February after 1,728 campaigners raised more than £103,000 for his travel and medical costs.

His family said he had been "struggling" in the six months since he was wounded and was now blind. But his parents Tony and Gill said additional money was raised to adapt his home to make it comfortable.

He was also said to be enjoying guitar lessons, playing the ukulele, walking, swimming and spinning, despite "struggling to come to terms with his blindness", according to his parents.

A derelict railway station house in Cornwall has been bought by Saltash Town Council for £165,000 to be restored and "reflect the town correctly", the local mayor says.

The Saltash station building, which is about 130-years-old, used to house the stationmaster's office, a waiting room and a cafe. It is in a bad state of repair and fenced off from the public because the roof is dangerous.

In the past, passengers and residents have complained about the neglected building, which greets people crossing the River Tamar on their journey across the Royal Albert Bridge.

Critics said they were unsure if it was money well spent. But Mayor of Saltash Jean Dent said: "We've had feedback from passengers, but mainly from the people of Saltash themselves. They said they wanted it sorted out. It needs to be something that reflects the town correctly, that we are a good place to be ... and we need to project it."

A string of anti-Islamic hate crimes across Exeter over just over a week have been condemned by the city council leader.

Pete Edwards and the police said, external they were pledging zero tolerance to religiously-motivated hate crimes. He said: "There is no place in Exeter for hate crime."

The first incident happened at Exeter Mosque on 10 June where three men were alleged to have shouted racially aggravated abuse at worshippers. Anti-Islamic graffiti appeared at Polsloe Bridge and in Whipton village on 12 and 13 June, and, on Saturday, a customer was abusive to staff at Chandos Deli in Princesshay.

Police said they wanted to hear from anyone with information about any of the incidents.

Interviews have been recorded detailing personal accounts of what it was like training in Dartmouth at different periods in time.

The exhibition, launching today, features the memories of 65 cadets, including the Duke of York, Prince Andrew.

Far from yearning for TV specials and leftover turkey, football fans have been looking up and discussing who their team is playing over Christmas, with next season's fixtures released this morning.

Plymouth Argyle face a 227-mile journey to MK Dons on Boxing Day, a 454-mile round trip, while Rochdale only have to get 19 miles to Blackburn Rovers.

However, given Plymouth's location relative to the other clubs, that is not really out of the ordinary. Even a trip to Bristol Rovers would take them more than 120 miles each way.

A head teacher at an academy in Cornwall showed "a cavalier attitude" to pupil safety and failed to tell employers that her school handyman husband had received a police caution for stealing ladies' underwear, a misconduct hearing has found.

Sarah Cooke was principal of Foxhole Academy, where Peter Cooke worked as a handyman. She resigned after her husband of 30 years was arrested early last year over an allegation of outraging public decency in front of a teenage boy. He was later found guilty of the offence.

A three-member National College for Teaching and Leadership professional misconduct panel found Mrs Cooke showed a "complete disregard" for safeguarding her pupils, and stated she was guilty of five charges of wrongdoing. She also failed to carry out proper staff background checks, for both her husband and herself, it ruled.

It concluded Mrs Cooke had breached teachers' professional standards and recommended a prohibition order.

Mrs Cooke, who was not present for the misconduct hearing, is facing a classroom ban. The Education Secretary will make a final decision on the case.

Former James Bond boss and British acting legend Dame Judi Dench says she is "particularly pleased" to be patron of an Exeter theatre because she has been "associated with the Northcott Theatre for many years".

Dame Judi, who is patron of the theatre for its 50th anniversary year, external, was a long-time friend and colleague of the Northcott's first director, Tony Church, and was also patron of the theatre’s former Friends scheme, the venue said.

She said: "I have been associated with the Northcott Theatre for many years, so I was particularly pleased to be asked to be a patron of the 50th birthday anniversary.

"With so many regional theatres having disappeared, it is important to support those that still survive and help them to thrive."

The theatre first opened its doors in November 1967.

Fire crews say they believe a fire at a residential home in Moretonhampstead was started deliberately.

Firefighters from across south Devon and Dartmoor, along with an incident command unit from Totnes, were called to Coppelia House on Court Street just after 21:00 on Tuesday.

It's the second fire at the home in four days.

Dame Judi Dench has become patron of Exeter's Northcott Theatre for its 50th anniversary year, the venue has announced.

The theatre said, external it was "greatly honoured" by Dame Judi accepting the invitation "at such an important time for the theatre", and that she was a long-time friend and colleague of the Northcott's first director, Tony Church.

The theatre first opened its doors in November 1967.
