    Fire crews from Tolvadden Fire Station have tweeted, external some pictures of them fighting the St Agnes Beacon blaze from last night.

    The blaze spread across a 15-acre area.

    A Devon charity which trains dogs to help people living with mental health conditions is hoping its animals will soon get the same recognition as guide dogs.

    Veterans with Dogs, which is based near Newton Abbot, supports people suffering from combat stress and other trauma-related conditions.

    Its course is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, and the charity said it has hundreds of people on its waiting list.

    Exeter City will begin their League Two season at home against Cambridge on 5 August, and will also have home advantage on Boxing Day as they welcome Forest Green Rovers to St James Park.

  5. Policing 'at risk' as officers deal with terrorpublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Policing in England and Wales could be at "significant" risk if resources are diverted to fight terrorism, the UK's top counter-terrorism officer has said.

    Counter-terrorism policing has been placed on an "emergency footing" after recent attacks, BBC Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw understands.

    Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley has asked ministers to reassure officers that funding will not be diverted from mainstream policing as a result.

    The Home Office said counter-terrorism funding would increase by 30% by 2022.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said earlier this week that there was "no specific intelligence to suggest any threat to our force area". However local senior officers also said that the UK threat level "remains at severe which means an attack is highly likely".

    Locally, armed officers have been on more visible patrols after the recent terror attacks in Manchester, and London.

    Police have also been "providing reassurance by visiting mosques, Islamic Centres and other locations" after the Finsbury Park terror attack in London which saw a man drive a van into Muslim worshippers.

    This is some of the damage caused by a large gorse fire in Cornwall yesterday and overnight.

    The blaze raged on St Agnes Beacon for most of Tuesday afternoon and early evening after it broke out just after 15:00. By 18:00, the fire covered 15 acres.

    Firefighters were at the scene overnight. However, by 07:00 this morning, only two appliances were still on the scene, monitoring the area for hotspots and damping down, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said.

    The English Football League fixtures for the 2017-18 campaign have been released this morning, with Plymouth Argyle playing in League One for the first time since 2011.

    Key fixtures for the Pilgrims include a trip to Peterborough on the opening day, on 5 August, while they will go to Milton Keynes Dons on Boxing Day and finish the season away at Gillingham in May.

    Five fire crews have been tackling a blaze at a residential home in Moretonhampstead overnight.

    Firefighters from across south Devon and Dartmoor, along with an incident command unit from Totnes, were called to Court Street just after 21:00 on Tuesday.

    A bedroom was badly damaged but no-one was injured. The cause is being investigated by firefighters and police.

    A major refurbishment of Newlyn Fish Market will see it fully refrigerated, those behind the proposals say.

    The £1.3m revamp of the market has been given the go-ahead in what is to be the first phase of plans to redevelop the harbour area.

    Those behind the proposals said they hoped the work would begin within the next couple of months and finish next year.

    As well as being refrigerated, the market will also eventually open up to online auctions, which should mean fishermen get a better price for their catch, managers said.

    A large area of Plymouth was without water last night on one of the hottest days of the year after a huge water mains burst, external under Tavistock Road.

    Traffic was disrupted during the evening rush hour and long queues built up to the north of the city.

    South West Water delivered bottled water to their most vulnerable customers with water bowsers set up to help those affected.

    It was a busy night for Cornwall's coastguard teams.

    The Penzance rescue team, along with the Penlee lifeboat, were called to reports of a red flare in Mounts Bay. A search of the area found nothing untoward.

    Coastguards from Newquay were called to Holywell Bay, where they helped a man who had fallen on the beach and injured his leg.

    Later on they were in action again, along with with their colleagues from St Agnes, after reports of flashing white lights in the St Agnes area. A search revealed a number of fishermen but, again, nothing untoward.

    The Hollands said medical staff had praised 18-year-old Kodie's efforts to help treat her father. She said she knew how to apply chest compressions after seeing it done on the American television medical drama, House MD, which starred Hugh Laurie.
