Two crews remain at the scene of a large gorse fire in Cornwall which raged on St Agnes Beacon for most of Tuesday afternoon and early evening.

The blaze broke out just after 15:00 on what was the hottest day of the year so far. By 18:00, the fire covered 15 acres.

A huge pall of smoke was reported heading out towards the sea, and local residents complained that people coming to see the fire were blocking narrow roads, hampering access for emergency vehicles. Police closed nearby roads at about 19:00 to keep them clear.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said that by 07:00 this morning only two appliances were still on the scene after steady progress was made overnight to bring the blaze under control.

Crews are monitoring the area for hotspots and damping down.
