About 30% of 118 vehicles stopped had one tyre or more with a tread depth measuring 3mm or under; a point at which tyre performance begins to fall dramatically.

PC Welch, who led the operation, said: “The condition of tyres and vehicle handling go hand in hand. Tyres are the only points of contact between a vehicle and the road.

"The principle is the same with any wearable item on a vehicle; the more worn they are, the less effective they become.

"There’s simply no excuse to not check your tyres regularly. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself there are more than enough garages and tyre centres around who will gladly check for you.”
