    Plans to cut 36 of Cornwall's councillors have been criticised by Mebyon Kernow (MK).

    The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has recommended the number be reduced from 123 to 87 by 2021.

    MK's leader, Dick Cole (pictured), said he was "extremely disturbed" by the proposal and called it an "assault on democracy in Cornwall".

    He said: "Wales has more than 1,200 councillors on its 22 unitary authorities, while Devon has just under 500 principal authority councillors and Somerset has over 400.

    "And yet the commission expects Cornwall to get by with only 87, which - in terms of representatives per head of population - means that many other areas will have more than twice the number of councillors as Cornwall."

    A 15-year-old boy has been seriously injured after crashing his bike into a parked a car in Cornwall.

    Devon and Cornwall Police say it happened on the A390 at St Ann's Chapel near Gunnislake at about 20:00 on Monday.

    Officers say the boy is from the Gunnislake area, and was riding an "advanced road bike".

    Plans for a new industrial and business park on the edge of Exeter have been rejected.

    Opponents to the scheme at West Exe Park had argued the development would cause "abject misery" to local residents by destroying the local landscape and causing traffic congestion on an already busy commuter route into the city.

    The decision was made by members of Teignbridge District Council.

    The developers, who had said the scheme would create more than 1,000 jobs, said they were disappointed and were considering an appeal.

  7. Mineshaft fall man 'amazed he survived'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 26 September 2017

    A man who was rescued after falling 15m down a disused mineshaft in Cornwall says a rucksack saved his life.

    Andrew Williams, from Wales, fell into the shaft at Cot Valley near St Just on Sunday.

    A huge rescue operation involving more than 50 people pulled him out, and he was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with an injured pelvis.

    Andrew said on Facebook, external: "I would like to thank everyone involved involved in yesterday's operation to rescue me safely from the mine.

    "Firstly, I am amazed that I survived the initial fall. I put this down to a full rucksack that took the brunt of the impact and saving me from banging my head; and, secondly, to have had my guardian angel watching over me."

    Triple amputee Mark Ormrod from Plymouth is due to compete in his first Invictus Games, external today.

    The former Royal Marine will be taking part in a hand cycling time trial later and has been training at the venue in Toronto where temperatures have exceeded 30C (86F).

  9. Motorcyclist treated for fractures after crashpublished at 11:06

    A motorcyclist has been taken to hospital after a crash near Bovey Tracey.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said the accident happened on the B3344 between Bovey Tracey and Chudleigh Knighton at about 18:15 on Monday.

    Officers said the motorbike collided with a car that was travelling in the opposite direction.

    The motorcyclist, a local man, was taken to hospital with several fractures.

    Officers appealed for information about the crash.

    More than 1,000 jobs could be created if a multi-million pound industrial development on the edge of Exeter gets the go-ahead later.

    People living in villages near land at West Exe Park have warned it could lead to extra traffic congestion on already busy commuter roads into the city.

    The body of a man has been found in a car near Teignmouth.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said, external they believed it was the body of 83-year-old Derek Woodley, who was reported missing in the area.

    The body was found on Monday evening, and officers said they were not treating the death as suspicious.

    Mr Woodley's next of kin had been informed but no formal identification had taken place yet, officer said.

  18. Man arrested in acid attack investigationpublished at 09:02

    A man has been arrested in connection with a suspected acid attack in Tiverton on Sunday.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said officers investigating a robbery had charged a man with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and throwing a corrosive fluid with the intent to burn, maim or disfigure.

    The man is due to appear at Exeter Magistrates' Court later.
