  3. Funding boost for Cornwall 'eco-town'published at 09:06 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

The government has announced extra funding to help draw up more detailed plans for a controversial new "eco-town" in mid Cornwall.

Cornwall Council granted outline planning permission for the so-called garden village at West Carclaze earlier this year.

Now the Communities Secretary, Sajid David has announced £3m of government cash which will be shared between 14 similar developments.

The MP for St Austell and Newquay, Steve Double says the development of 1,500 homes will include a new school and other necessary infrastructure.

He added: "As we saw in the Budget a few weeks ago, we got £79m from the government for a new road which will help that area. And there will be a GP surgery and health facilities as part of this development."

  4. Parking charges planned to tackle dog mess problempublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

    Kirk England
    BBC Radio Devon

Parking charges could be introduced to car parks on Exmoor in a bid to tackle the problem of dog owners not picking up after their pets.

The sheer volume of dog mess left at Haddon Hill near Dulverton has meant that special bins have been installed.

Exmoor National Park Authority says income from parking charges could help pay for the bins to be emptied and for maintaining the car park.

Although locals may be able to buy a permit, some walkers are unhappy at the prospect of having to pay.

Chris Stoyle, who lives nearby, said: "Are we paying for other people's irresponsibility? Because we always clear up after us. The fact that it's a national park, we already pay for it to be here. We live locally and I think it should be free for everybody."

Emergency services were called to St Helen's Close in Croyde at about 22:00 on Monday.

A crew from Braunton and two crews from Barnstaple attended the blaze.

The room had 70% fire and 30% smoke damage, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

The cause is believed to have been accidental, it added.

  6. Committee to examine Devonport Royal Navy impactpublished at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

    BBC Radio Devon

A committee of MPs will receive views from the public on what the impact could be if the Royal Navy was to lose the Devonport-based warships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark, along with 1,000 Royal Marines.

People have been able to submit their concerns - which will be discussed during the inquiry - via the Defence Committee website.

The committee will examine the importance of the amphibious capability of the vessels and troops and what the impact on morale would be if any cuts were made.

The inquiry will also ask what impact any changes would have on Devonport and other communities.

The Ministry of Defence has previously said that no decisions have been made and that talk of cutbacks is "pure speculation".

  8. Fire service welcomes oxygen masks for petspublished at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Lifesaving equipment to improve the survival chances of Cornwall's pets caught in house fires is being welcomed by the county's fire service.

Organisations, including the RSPCA, have funded 31 animal oxygen kits for Cornwall's fire vehicles.

Some of the masks have already been used across the country to treat dogs, cats and even a parrot.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service dog handler Mark Smith said the new equipment will form an "integral part" of the rescue routine.

He added: "As soon as we recover them and remove them from the property, we can assess the animal for welfare, check their basics like you do for humans and get them on oxygen as soon as possible if we think they need it."

  9. Call to treat mental health patients closer to homepublished at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

    John Ayres
    BBC Spotlight

Families whose relatives are sectioned under the Mental Health Act are calling for their care to be provided much closer to home.

Two women, from Devon, that both have relatives treated more than 200 miles (322km) away from home, believe the distance makes it harder for their relatives to recover.

The patients involved claim the distance is making their health worse, which in turn is making it much harder for them to be released and returned to their normal lives.

The Devon Partnership NHS Trust, which places patients in mental health units, says reducing the number of people being treated outside of the county is one of its overriding priorities.
