    The Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has paid a visit to Appledore shipyard as its owners Babcock announce further details of the bid to help build a new class of warship.

    The Ministry of Defence announced plans to procure a new class of frigates, the Type 31e, as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy that launched last year.

    The warships are set to be built in the UK, with a set price cap no more than £250m per frigate for the first batch of five, with an investment decision to be made at the end of this year.

    Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said the visit to Devon left him "in no doubt of the current resurgence of UK shipbuilding".

    "The South West is crucial for our military, with a particularly special connection with our Royal Navy and Royal Marines."

    A woman has a number of injuries to her head and neck after an assault in Plymouth, police say.

    It happened on Clifton Place at about 03:15 on Sunday.

    The woman was taken to Derriford Hospital and her injuries are not life-threatening.

    A 52-year-old man was charged with wounding with intent.

    He was remanded in custody and will appear at Plymouth Magistrates later.

    The coastal footpath between Loe Bar and Porthleven has been closed by the National Trust due to landslides caused by recent stormy weather.

    The Environment Agency is warning people that a new outfall "might make crossing along the beach treacherous" and to "exercise caution".
