Specialist equipment, worth hundreds of pounds, has been stolen from a car owned by the chairman of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team.

Vicky Coumbes, who lives in the St Judes area of Plymouth, says she discovered thieves had broken into her car on Saturday.

She said "first aid kits and GPS systems used to navigate on the moor" were among the items taken.

"I was preparing for a call out on Saturday morning and went out to my car to find a window smashed and all of my kit taken."

Ms Coumbes had loaded her car before helping to look for missing Ivybridge man, Daniel Dawes.

  2. Parents 'upset and angry' as school is set to closepublished at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

Villagers on the Lizard Peninsula say they're worried their community will suffer when the local primary school closes at the end of the month.

The Keskowethyans Multi Academy Trust, which runs St Martin-in-Meneage Community Primary School, says it has falling pupil numbers which means it is "no longer viable".

Villagers say parents with young families are now unlikely to move in.

David Murray's 11-year-old son Joel is one of the final three pupils at the school and says the closure is "disruptive to his education".

"He's only got two terms left to go and he's having to move a new school that he doesn't want to move to. The friendship groups that he had have dissipated. We're really just upset and angry about it."

The trust said it made the decision with a "heavy heart" and its "main priority was the education and welfare of the youngsters".

    BBC Radio Cornwall

"You need to test your smoke alarms to make sure they are working" - that's the advice from one homeowner whose house caught fire in Cornwall at the weekend.

Shelly Pearson was at home when her husband James said something smelt "smoky" and found their hall filled with smoke after their alarms didn't go off.

She said they "haven't tested them for years".

"They didn't go off and we've got three. You put them up and you think the battery lasts forever."

More than 40 firefighters using five appliances from across south Cornwall fought the fire in Upper Eastcliffe Road in Par on Saturday night.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has been offering free smoke alarms and advice to neighbours in the area.

    BBC Spotlight

Work is due to start today on repairing the damage to the beach at Perranporth in Cornwall after the coastline was lashed by heavy storms last week.

The winds and high tides eroded tonnes of sand away from the beach, forming sand cliffs and flattening two bridges.

The power of Storm Eleanor has also shifted sand at various sites in Cornwall to create new landscapes on beaches.

    BBC Radio Cornwall

The owner of a house in Par that was partially destroyed by fire on Saturday says she is "lucky to be alive".

Crews from all over south Cornwall fought the flames which engulfed the house in Upper Eastcliffe Road.

Shelly Pearson said she and her husband James were enjoying a quiet night in when he said the house started to smell "smoky".

Shelly said she thought it was "just the logs" on their open fire, but when James went in the hall that's when they realised it was serious when the room was filled with smoke.

"He ran upstairs and then screamed and said 'get out, get out, call the fire brigade'. And that was it, it was just up in flames".

    BBC Radio Devon

A reduced train service will operate today between Devon and London Waterloo. Members of the RMT rail union are taking industrial action in a dispute over the role of guards.

The union says it's been left with no option but to press ahead with the strike after talks broke down last week.

South Western Railway (SWR), external says it has repeatedly guaranteed that no-one will lose their job and that a second person will be on board every train.

SWR which operates out of stations including London Waterloo, Reading, Exeter and Southampton, plans to run about 70% of its normal service.

Further strikes are expected on Wednesday and Friday.

SWR is one of five train firms beginning a fresh wave of strikes across the country in separate disputes over "rail safety".
