    Cornwall will soon become the first rural area in the country where bus passengers don’t need to carry change, or any cash at all.

    In what is believed to be a national first, all the county’s 12 scheduled bus operators will soon be able to let passengers swipe debit cards when they board buses in the same way as passengers now pay on the London Underground.

    It’s one of the only visible fruits so far of the government’s devolution package for Cornwall.

    The Campaign for Better Transport's Chris Todd tells me what's being done in the county "will go a long way" to making bus travel more sustainable in the long-term.

    NHS plans to move cancer services from Cornwall to Devon have been branded "unacceptable" by a local Conservative MP.

    North Cornwall's Scott Mann raised the issue, external at Prime Minister's Questions.

    He said: "This would see many constituents having to travel hundreds of miles to access treatment many times a week.

    "These proposals are unacceptable to my constituents, and the vast majority of people in Cornwall."

    In response, Theresa May said travel times were an important issue.

    She said: "We are establishing radiotherapy networks that review the access issues, and service provision on a regular basis and address any shortcomings in the area.

    "That's backed up by £130m for new and upgraded radiotherapy machines."

    The family of a teenage boy with autism says he has become happier and more confident since he was brought back home to live in Cornwall.

    Josh Wills previously spent three years in a hospital in Birmingham because the right care could not be provided in the county.

    A group championing road safety in Devon and Cornwall says it will work authorities to review crashes along a stretch of the A38.

    It comes after a woman in her 60s was left in a critical condition in hospital after a crash on the A38 between Tideford and Saltash on Tuesday afternoon.

    Peninsula Road Safety Partnership's Marcus Laine said on Twitter changes to engineering, road design and increased enforcement were all being considered after "far too many" crashes.

    The stage is set for a Cornish theatre to undergo a makeover, thanks to a £131,000 grant.

    The Sterts Theatre, near Liskeard, has been welcoming audiences for nearly 30 years, but the facilities back stage are far from star quality, with performers holed up in an old caravan, walking to the stage along muddy walkways.

    The tented amphitheatre at Upon Cross, external has hosted star names such as Jo Brand and Ed Byrne, as well as professional touring companies and amateur groups.

    Funding from Viridor Credits, the Landfill Communities Fund and Cornwall Council means the dated facilities will be replaced by purpose built changing rooms, props and a set.

    BBC Radio Devon is celebrating its 35th birthday today after broadcasting from its Exeter studios for the first time - on this day - in 1983.

    Star Wars Return of the Jedi was the biggest film of the year, Neil Kinnock replaced Michael Foot as leader of the Labour Party, and Phil Collins was at number one with You Can't Hurry Love.

    Broadcasting legend Tony Blackburn has presented several shows on the station over the last three decades (pictured).

    He's said in the past that Devon was "one of my favourite counties".

    "It brings back great memories from the '60s and '70s when I used to do my roadshows in Plymouth and all round the area," he said.

    The NHS is "haemorrhaging" nurses with one in 10 leaving the NHS in England each year, figures show.

    More than 33,000 walked away last year, piling pressure on understaffed hospital wards and community services.

    Mary Trevelyan quit the NHS two-and-a-half years after graduating.

    She was working as a staff nurse in a London hospital, but quit last year after the pressures of the job left her stressed and depressed. She had only worked in the NHS for two-and-a-half years.

    She is now living with her family in Cornwall and told the BBC she had not decided what to do next, but was considering moving abroad.

    Dogs will now have to be kept on leads at Stover Country Park in Newton Abbot after a duck was killed in an attack.

    Devon County Council has put up new temporary signs saying owners must keep their pets on a lead at all times around the lake and watercourses.

    A spokesman said signs had always asked dog owners to keep their animals "under close control" in the park but the wording has now been changed to make it clearer following the attack.

    Jack Nowell's girlfriend, Zoe Pearce, has posted a message on Instagram to say the couple are expecting their first child.

    The England and Exeter player wrote a caption saying: "I did that."

    Jack Nowell will miss the Chiefs' crucial Champions Cup trip to Glasgow this weekend with an ankle injury.

    The 24-year-old is also trying to get fit for England's training camp in Portugal ahead of this year's Six Nations, which starts on 3 February.

    Councillors were outraged after they found out that a state-of-the-art facility for the disabled at a community centre in Honiton was being used for storage, external.

    Honiton town council paid £50,000 for the installation of the Changing Places facility in the Beehive centre.

    The BBC has apologised after Escape to the Country incorrectly labelled Devon and Dorset on one of its graphics in Monday's programme, describing it as an "honest mistake".

    Some viewers took to Twitter to complain.

    Worcester Cathedral or Birmingham's Millennium Point could play host to the spacecraft that carried Tim Peake to and from the International Space Station in 2016.

    The Russian Soyuz TMA-19M capsule went on display last year at London's Science Museum.

    It is currently on a tour across the country, external to eight locations, seven of which have already been selected.

    The Science Museum Group says the eighth, set to host from August, is the prize in a competition among a shortlist of five places, including Worcester Cathedral and Millennium Point, Birmingham., external

    The other three places are Peterborough Cathedral, The Forum in Norwich and TR2 in Plymouth.

    A judging panel will now visit all five and make a final decision in March.

  19. Six arrested for attempted murder after stabbingpublished at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2018

    Four teenagers and two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing in north Devon.

    A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said a man in his 20s was "assaulted with a sharp object" in the Forches area of Barnstaple.

    Officers and a police helicopter were called to the incident just after 22:00 on Tuesday.

    Those arrested included:

    • Two 15-year-olds from north Devon
    • A 16-year-old from north Devon
    • A 19-year-old from north Devon
    • A 23-year-old from Exeter
    • A 42-year-old from Exeter

    Police said the victim's injuries were "not believed to be serious".

    Exactly 35 years ago, at 06:00 on Monday 17 January 1983, BBC Radio Devon started broadcasting across the county for the very first time.

    The station has covered major stories from the foot-and-mouth outbreak, to the grounding of the Napoli cargo ship off the east Devon coast (pictured), and broadcast live from thousands of events.
