  1. Proposals to upgrade A303published at 07:08 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2018

    BBC Radio Devon

Details have been released about a proposed upgrade to one of the main road routes from Devon to London.

The plans to improve the A303 between Sparkford and Ilchester in Somerset, would cost £179m.

A public consultation will begin later.

The proposal involves bypassing the existing Hazlegrove Roundabout.

Highways England says 22,000 vehicles use the stretch everyday and the aim of the scheme is to cut congestion and improve safety.

    Quote Message

The A303 is a vital route between the South West and the rest of the country and that is why this dualling scheme is so important. These plans will make real improvements to journeys as well as improving safety and providing nearly 30 miles of dual carriageway between South Petherton and Mere in Somerset. We’ve worked hard with the local community and our partners to develop the right scheme for drivers, local residents and local business and we welcome all feedback on the detailed plans at consultation.
