  5. Slavery raid: 'It went all around the world'published at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2018

    BBC Spotlight

A man who works on the flower farm in Cornwall that was raided by police yesterday as part of an anti-slavery operation described it as "well run", and said migrant workers are "well looked after".

    Brindley Hosken

After the raid three men were arrested under suspicion of modern slavery offences, but have since been released by police while inquiries continue.

But Brindley Hosken - who owns a farm but helps out at Bosahan as a tractor driver during busy periods - says he "couldn't believe" the allegations.

"It's well run, everyone knows their job and as far as I'm concerned we all get on well together," Mr Hosken said.

Whilst he did not know details of the migrant workers pay, he said they lived in caravans which were "always being updated" and were able to access to the internet through a computer room.

"I would have thought the majority of them are happy" he said. "As far as I can see."

Commenting on the events after the raid, Mr Hosken said many of the Romanian workers were contacted by their families "to make sure they were alright and not locked up".

"It went all around the world", he added.

After the raid, about 100 migrant workers gathered outside a police station to protest against the arrest of their bosses.

Police have said that they believe the woman who died in the M5 crash today was 29-year-old Elaina Beard from Bridgwater.

Her family have issued the following tribute:

“We are totally heartbroken at the loss of our Elaina.

“She was a loving sister, daughter, auntie and friend, who was so caring both as a carer in her day job and a family member.

“Even as we write this it still doesn't seem real that she was taken away from us so early.

“We are supporting each other as a family and have sought a little comfort in the outpouring of messages from people close and far, and we thank you all.

“We take some comfort knowing she is now with our nan and grandad.”

Formal identification is yet to take place.
