  4. No council money to help Cornish day centre stay openpublished at 09:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2018

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Campaigners fighting to keep a day centre from closing in Cornwall say they remain optimistic despite being told that the town council doesn't have the money to help.

The Donald Thomas Day Centre in Camborne is due to close next month because it's losing about £300 a week. Campaigners have asked the council for £20,000 to help keep it open.

They were told at a full council meeting on Thursday night that such a large sum isn't available in either this or next year's budget.

However, the council's finance committee is expected to take another look at the plea for help later this month.

Linda Barton, from the centre's user group, says it is still needed for local people.

"We've got loads of ideas which will bring people in. Hopefully it will take off."

    Quote Message

The M5 remains closed in both directions between junctions 25 and 26 following a fatal collision this morning. Sadly, one person has died in the collision, which happened at just before 6.20am today. Several vehicles were involved and the northbound and southbound carriageways were both affected. Four people have suffered injuries and have been taken to hospital. We expect the motorway to be closed for a significant amount of time so would urge motorists to avoid the area and make sure they follow diversions put in place by Highways England. If your journey isn’t necessary, please consider delaying it until later in the day.
