  7. St Ives residents call parking charge increase 'madness'published at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Some residents in St Ives say a proposal by Cornwall Council to increase the cost of reserved parking by up to 60% is "madness".

It could mean raising the charge for a resident's parking space to about £850 and a business permit to almost £1,500.

But local people said it was not justified when other towns such as Newquay and Penzance paid far less.

    St Ives parking

The owner of Fish Pye Pottery in St Ives, Laura McCrossen, said she felt she was being driven out.

She said: "I would say it'll make it one of the most expensive places in the country - it's becoming obscene.

"The high street branches are coming into the town more. It's losing all these little, individual businesses; and the buzz from the town is being snuffed out by big business."

Cornwall Council said charges had remained the same for three years while demand for parking had increased.

It said the increase would reflect the market value of the spaces, and payment by direct debit would help spread the cost.

  10. South West fishermen 'not earning enough to pay for fuel'published at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    John Ayres
    BBC Spotlight

    Boats in Plymouth Harbour

There are fears that fishermen in the South West are putting to sea in rougher weather than usual because of the need to pay their bills.

Some people in the industry claim the recent severe weather has led to the lowest catches since 2011, with high winds and fog forcing all but the biggest trawlers to remain in port.

    Steven Walker

Plymouth-based skipper Steven Walker said he was out last week but had to abandon the trip and said he hardly caught enough fish to cover the cost of going out to sea.

"It was horrible," he said. "It was time to come home. We didn't earn enough to pay for the fuel.

"We've got to try something to try to earn money to pay the bills. We are forced to work in that kind of weather at the moment."

Over the next eight weeks, Crisis will be speaking to groups and individuals who have an interest with regard to rough sleeping to understand what is happening locally, and what needs to change.

Crisis will be looking at how to ensure a supply of decent affordable housing for rough sleepers along with the support they need to sustain a home. Their recommendations will be made in March.

  14. Badgers rescued from disused swimming poolpublished at 18:07 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2018

    Sian Davies
    BBC News Online

Two badgers have been rescued after getting trapped in a disused swimming pool in Truro.

The RSPCA were called to help free the stranded wild animals, who were unable escape after they had fallen into the disused pool.

The charity urged anyone with swimming pools or ponds to build a ramp, slope the edges or use stones as steps to allow any wildlife which should fall into the water - or empty hole - to climb out.

RSPCA animal welfare officer Felicity Cross said: “The owner of the property was unsure about how long they had been in there as he doesn't go out the back very frequently, but we think they had been stuck for two or three days.

    BadgersImage source, RSPCA

“Both were huddled together up the drier end as the pool had a fair amount of moss, mud and rain water in it.

“With help from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and Cornwall Badger Rescue, I put a large dog kennel into the pool and with a little bit of coaxing both went fairly quickly.

“Both badgers were cold, wet and subdued and were left to rest and dry off a little before we checked the area for badger activity and located an active run close by.

“As the badgers had recovered a bit since being rescued it was decided to release them on the run. Both wasted no time in leaving us to get back to the warmth of their sett.”

The company that saved two North Devon theatres from permanent closure has had its temporary contract renewed by the local council until next year.

Parkwood Creative has managed the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple and Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe since April 2017 after the collapse of North Devon Theatres' Trust forced them to temporarily close.

  18. Bypass proposals to improve Camelford's air qualitypublished at 16:47 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2018

    Katie Barker

Plans for a new bypass in Camelford are one of 14 measures proposed by Cornwall Council to improve the poor air quality in the area.

Local residents were being encouraged to give feedback on a draft plan drawn up to tackle high levels of pollution recorded mainly on the A39, Fore Street, and High Street area, the council said.

Those findings led to the council declaring it an Air Quality Management Area in 2017, meaning that air quality in the town was declared particularly poor, with excessive levels of traffic-related nitrogen dioxide measured.

Improvement measures suggested range from anti-idling zones - where vehicle engines would have to be turned off - to a bypass.

Environment cabinet member Sue James said: "Camelford is now facing the impact of vehicle emissions in a confined area close to where people live.

"Once we've considered all comments, we'll be able to begin implementing local measures to improve air quality in Camelford."

People can take part in a consultation online, external.
