  8. South Crofty: 20 years since it shut, but will it reopen?published at 08:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2018

Neil Gallacher, Business & Industry Correspondent
    BBC Spotlight

    South Crofty

It's exactly two decades since the end of an era in Cornwall - South Crofty mine, near Camborne, produced tin for the last time on 6 March 1998.

It was the last of many hundreds of mines which, between them, had been the bedrock of the local economy for centuries.

It was widely seen as the death of mining in the county, but we now know reports of that death may have been exaggerated. Resumption of mining looks possible ... even likely.

Canadian firm Strongbow Exploration will soon be ready to start pumping Crofty out - "dewatering" it, in the jargon.

It’s no secret that the mine still contains tin. What’s changed is the value of tin.

It’s now about six times what it was when the mine shut: now about £16,000 a tonne, whereas, when Crofty shut, it was £2,700 a tonne.

We'll be looking at the past and future of Crofty through the day.

We appreciate this is a vital route and we are working closely with our partners to decide on the best course of action from here."
