    Quote Message

I've heard tales of GPs, nurses and other staff trudging through knee-high snow to get to work, nurses using quad bikes to reach patients, and staff sleeping over to make sure they can continue to care. The community really pulled out all the stops too, helping our staff with lifts on tractors, in 4X4 vehicles and volunteering to help in their local hospital."

Some motorists forced to abandon vehicles on the A38 near Exeter in snowy weather say they are facing a possible £150 charge to retrieve them.

Highways England and police advised drivers on Thursday to leave vehicles until storms had passed and conditions improved.

After the A38 reopened on Friday, Highways England promoted an urgent message for owners to collect their cars immediately so the road could be treated and reopened.

It added that it appreciated that the weather "was exceptional" and anyone who had their vehicle towed away should contact it "to discuss their specific circumstances so a decision can be made in relation to charges".

  17. Mother accused of poisoning says she 'did nothing wrong'published at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Amy Gladwell
    BBC News Online

A mother accused of poisoning her baby daughter with salt broke down in court insisting that she did nothing wrong.

The woman, from the St Austell area, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wept at Truro Crown Court as she declared the then 18-month-old's health and safety were her priority when she fell seriously ill in April 2016.

She denied claims from prosecutors that she appeared more concerned about her father-in-law's "lairy" behaviour than paramedics' efforts to save her daughter's life as she sent messages to friends about it.

"No, you’re wrong," she said. "I know what I felt that day, I know what I feel for my daughter".

The trial previously heard the child had high levels of salt in her blood when she was hospitalised, but survived.

    The trial continues.

  18. Roads blocked by snow drifts and thawspublished at 15:24 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    William Candelent

Multiple highway teams are working on clearing inaccessible routes in north Devon, roads bosses say.

Devon County Council said a 15ft-high snow drift sweeping on to the A39 over the weekend and its thawing caused a road collapse at Barbrook, near Lynton, but that the route had reopened for "essential travel only".

However, it added that snow was expected to remain on Exmoor for the following week and so driving with caution was highly advised.

Woody Bay, Martinhoe and Slade Lane are three other north Devon communities affected.

Council cabinet member Stuart Hughes said: "We are doing everything we can to restore links to these communities."
