    Police car in the snow

A police officer has been praised for displaying "meritorious conduct" after saving the life of a woman during Storm Emma.

PC Jack Rickard was not supposed to be working on Friday night but reported for duty at Bude Police Station to see if he could be of assistance during heavy snow.

On his walk to work he heard the faint cries of a woman in distress.

He found her curled up on Bude golf course after she had become disorientated whilst walking home.

She was found to be extremely cold and incoherent - he picked her up and carried her towards an ambulance station. Her condition deteriorated and she became "unresponsive".

PC Rickard and a member of the public helped to warm the woman up and called for paramedics.

He said: "I did what any officer would have done in that situation.

"I am just happy that the woman was eventually allowed home and was safe and well."

DCC Paul Netherton said: "The woman was later returned home and suffered no lasting effects, however, without the actions of Jack and the member of public this woman may well have ended up in a much more serious condition.

"This is yet another example of the professional police service that our officers delivered to our community throughout the horrendous conditions last week."
