    Devon County Council Leader John Hart has pledged that the A379 at Slapton "has to reopen".

    He visited Slapton yesterday to see the damage caused by Storm Emma and said it was "worse than I thought".

    Following the visit, Councillor Hart confirmed the County Council is working as quickly as possible to establish how the route can be reconnected and is seeking what emergency support central Government may be able to offer.

    Councillor Hart said: "It's early days and we need a bit of time to work out what is practical and what it will cost, but I can reassure people that the road has to reopen, and hopefully we can have a road that will last for some time."

    Pink ribbons have been tied to trees and hung to show solidarity with the family of Maisie Duncan.

    The seven-year-old died when a car hit her and crashed into a house as she was playing in snow in Looe, Cornwall, last Thursday.

    Posts on social media show the ribbons have been hung in memory of Maisie and in support of her brother Charlie, who has lost his twin sister.

    An appeal set up to support her family has surpassed £12,600.

    Redruth Town Council has revealed plans to build a new skate park and is asking people what they want it to look like.

    It's working on a project to develop the area at East End Playing Fields and already has outline planning permission.

    There's been a crash between a van and a moped near Stithians Reservoir.

    Emergency services received numerous 999 calls reporting smoke coming from the area.

    Appliances from Tolvaddon and Falmouth responded and found both vehicles "well alight", but everyone had managed to get out.

    A new joint director of Children's Services has been appointed to lead Plymouth and Torbay's Children Services.

    Plymouth will from 1 April begin a formal contractual arrangement with Torbay Council to manage its Children's Services.

    The arrangement comes as the councils are being asked to work "in partnership" to raise standards and ensure the service is taken out of government intervention.

    Children's Services in Torbay were rated inadequate in January 2016 and it has been recognised as under-performing since 2011.

    Plymouth City Council will take on the full managerial responsibility for children's services in Torbay, although the political responsibility remains with Torbay Council.

    Police were called to Plymouth Crown Court this morning after a woman claimed there was an explosive device in one of the vehicles parked outside.

    Police were called at 09:36 and a liquid, believed to be water, was sprayed on vehicles outside the court.

    A police search confirmed there was no threat.

    The woman was found by police and is being supported in relation to mental health issues.

    No-one was harmed.

    More than 94% of children in Devon have been offered a place at their first choice school.

    Devon County Council says it's offering more than 98% of families one of their three preferences.

    This year the authority received 7,004 applicants from pupils for a place at a secondary school in September.

    The South West's ambulance service took more than 1,000 calls from just one person in a year.

    BBC research has found South West Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust has one of the most prolific callers in the country - ambulances were dispatched to the person 212 times.

    This patient, called Margaret, called 999 at least once a fortnight but says she had nowhere else to turn for help.

    She said: "There were so many, I can't remember really. And every time I had a fall or a freeze the ambulance was called.

    "About eight times out of 10 I didn't need to go to hospital."

    An NHS spokesman said the calls were often related to mental health, chronic pain and alcohol or drug dependence.

    Vicki Nash from mental health charity Mind said the figures show that individuals' needs were not being met.

    Citizens Advice Exeter has released a damning report that documents what it believes are flaws in the way sick people and people with disabilities are assessed and not properly allocated benefits.

    The charity is calling for an overhaul of the assessment system, saying vulnerable people are being wrongly denied help they are entitled to, causing them hardship, stress, and anxiety.

    The Department for Work and Pensions says assessments work for the majority of people but it's committed to improving the experience of claimants.

    A man believed to be brandishing a machete in Exeter has been arrested.

    Police were called at about 17:10 yesterday to reports of a man making threats with a weapon on Sidwell Street.

    A 43-year-old man was taken into police custody on suspicion of affray and awaits interview.

    No-one was hurt and police said it was an isolated incident.

  14. Police renew appeal after Plymouth machete attackpublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2018

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a man and woman were seriously injured by a man believed to be armed with a machete.

    Armed units were sent to the scene in Plymouth where the pair, both in their 20s, were found with serious injuries.

    The man had suffered a number of lacerations and both were taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment.

    The attack happened at about 14:25 on Monday at Billacombe Road, near the junction to Stanborough Road.

    Police said the suspects are believed to have fled the scene and abandoned their vehicle in the Ivybridge area.

    It is thought they have used a second vehicle from Ivybridge to get out of the area.

    Anyone witnesses to this attack or the abandoned car, is asked to contact 101 quoting crime reference CR/019275/18.

    Truro City FC will continue to play at Treyew Road for the 2018/19 season after an agreement was reached, the club has said., external

    This means supporters will be saved from making the 170-mile round trip to Torquay to watch their team play home matches - sharing a ground with the National League club was an option at one point.

    Chairman Peter Masters said: “I had to prepare for all eventualities, however after some very tough negotiations I was able to secure another season which will hopefully now see a seamless transition to the new Stadium for Cornwall with the added bonus of allowing us to participate in the play-offs and accept promotion to The National League if the opportunity presents itself."

    The Stadium proposal goes in front of Cornwall Council in April.
