  14. PC 'raped woman he met on dating site'published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2018

    Miles Davis
    BBC News Online

A police officer raped a woman he met on an online dating site, a court has heard.

    Canning

PC Ryan Canning, 44, raped the woman at his house the third time they met, Truro Crown Court was told.

PC Canning, from Burraton Coombe near Saltash, Cornwall, is accused of carrying out the attack between 1 May and 1 July 2014.

He was suspended from duty with Devon and Cornwall Police at the start of the investigation.

PC Canning met the woman he raped on the internet dating site Plenty of Fish, the court heard.

Stephen Mooney, for the prosecution, said the woman trusted PC Canning because of his position as a serving police officer.

They met at a bar in Plymouth and then twice at PC Canning’s home.

On the second meeting at his home the defendant and the alleged victim were kissing on a sofa.

The court heard PC Canning “wanted to go further” and the woman tried to push him away.

Mr Mooney said: "He carried on regardless and they ended up on the floor with her on her back."

During the alleged rape the woman told PC Canning she was having her period.

Mr Mooney said: "His reaction was that he just smirked."

The court heard after the event PC Canning sent her a text apologising and saying sorry things had become awkward between them.

  15. Recycling collections suspended across Devonpublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A Teignbridge District Council recycling lorry

The bad weather has meant that recycling collections across Devon have been suspended.

Pick-ups have been cancelled in east Devon, Exeter, mid Devon, Teignbridge, Torbay and Torridge, while there are warnings that there could be disruption in the South Hams, west Devon and north Devon.

    • East Devon - All recycling and waste collections are suspended. Collections will resume when it is safe to do so
    • Exeter - Roads and pavements are too dangerous for bin collections today. They will do an extra round on Saturday
    • Mid Devon - Waste and recycling collections have been suspended
    • Teignbridge - The council has had to suspend today's bin collections due to the snow
    • Torbay - Waste and recycling crews have been advised to stand down due to the adverse weather conditions
    • South Hams - The council is asking residents to leave refuse or recycling out as usual. If they are unable to collect refuse or recycling today, they will do their best to collect it by the end of the week. If they do not manage this they will run an extra collection service on Saturday
    • West Devon - Residents are being asked to leave waste and recycling out until 19.00. If they are unable to make the usual refuse or recycling collection, they will return on Saturday 24 March
    • North Devon - Collection vehicles have not been able to access a number of areas today due to the snow. As a result, the following areas will not receive a black bin collection today: Lynton, Barbrook, Combe Martin, Loxhore, Trentishoe, Brendon and Forches (green bins) plus Ilfracombe. They may also be unable to access Mortehoe. Unfortunately, due to the extent of this disruption, it is unlikely that they will be able to return to make the collections at a later date
    • Torridge - There will be no waste and recycling collections in Torridge. This means that there will be a double collection next Monday
    • Plymouth - There is no mention of any disruption to services so far
