  13. Bid to push for replacing tower blocks' cladding rejectedpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Chris Baker
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

    Mount Wise tower block

An attempt by Devonport councillors to get ministers to honour their promise to remove cladding from three tower blocks has been rejected.

Plymouth City Council voted against a Labour motion calling on the government to finance urgent improvements to Tamar House, Tavy House and Lynher House.

Similar material to the cladding used on Grenfell Tower, which has been blamed for making the fire that consumed the building last year so deadly, was used on the blocks. Estimates of the cost to install new cladding vary between £13m and £20m.

Devonport Councillor Bill Stevens, who put the motion to the city council, said the government was giving the impression it had washed its hands of people who live in the "most dangerous circumstances" in the three Mount Wise blocks.

Council leader Ian Bowyer said he recognised the frustration of residents, but said interim safety measures were in place and the fire service was satisfied with those temporary arrangements.

  20. Is a merger on the cards for two of Devon’s hospitals?published at 15:09 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Jenny Walrond
    Health Correspondent, BBC Spotlight

    Northern Devon District Hospital

Northern Devon Healthcare and the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital trusts say they are "working together to explore (the) clinical sustainability challenge in North Devon".

    What does that actually mean?

The South West’s most remote hospital struggles to recruit in some specialties.

It’s made it more difficult to sustain a number of services, including paediatrics and stroke care, as well as ear nose and throat services.

    Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital

In recent years, there has been a campaign to keep services in north Devon. Devon’s four hospitals have been working more closely together and, in particular, Northern Devon and the Royal Devon and Exeter.

In a few days' time, the chief executive of Northern Devon, Dr Alison Diamond, is due to retire. Consultants in Barnstaple have made it clear they don’t want current medical director Dr George Thomson to take over. Now discussions are taking place about whether the two hospitals should share a chief executive.

Rumours have been circulating for months about a potential future merger.

That’s not a phrase that’s currently being used by the two trusts, but it is also not being ruled out in the future.
