    Two people have been rescued from the sea at Starcross after they fell into the water while transferring from their motorboat to their dinghy.

    The couple, who were in their 60s, were wearing life jackets but only one self-inflated in the water.

    Exmouth inshore lifeboat was launched at 13:40, but before the lifeboat reached them, sailors from local sailing school Sail Exmouth rescued the couple and took them ashore.

    A flood alert has been issued for the south Devon coast, external from Start Point to Dawlish Warren by the Environment Agency.

    The alert, which means people should be prepared, warns that flooding is possible over high tide on Friday morning. High water at Exmouth is due at 11:00.

    Areas at risk are exposed east-facing locations, including: Hallsands, Beesands, Torcross, Slapton, Blackpool Sands, Brixham, Broadsands, Goodrington, Paignton, Hollicombe, Torquay, Oddicombe, Teignmouth Promenade and Dawlish.

    It could see waves overtopping sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations in Torbay.

    The agency said: "People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast."

  3. Licence-suspended pub 'will work with police to reopen'published at 15:45 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Managers of a pub in Paignton that has been closed down temporarily say they will work with police to restore order.

    Winston's has had its licence suspended by Torbay Council after a number of incidents that police attended.

    One in March saw a customer assaulted, ending up unconscious in the road, and narrowly avoided being hit by a coach.

    Police also described the door staff as "out of control".

    Solicitor James Cross, who represents the pub's owner, said doormen from a different company were now employed and other improvements were under way.

    He added that the owner and staff would "endeavour to ensure that everything is done to reopen the premises, to have the support of the police, and work with the police to make sure Winston's is well run".

    An urgent warning has been given in Cornwall after Trading Standards officers said they had received a number of reports of cold calling.

    A driveway and patio firm has been reported to have charged residents between £3,000 and £15,000 for work, and waived a statutory 14-day cooling off period, external.

    St Austell and Bodmin have been targeted so far, officers said, adding that people should not open their open to any such callers.

    Sian Betts, head of the women's network at NHS Digital, says its important to recognise developments in women's rights in the last 100 years but more needs to be done.

    "We're speaking out locally because I think you have to change the mindset of the people around you first," she said.

    "Women are succeeding in what were considered male roles and that message [needs to] get out to schools. I think we have to work at a local level to improve that."

    An appeal has been launched to find the owner of a diamond ring valued at about £40,000, which police believe was stolen.

    The ring was seized from a Plymouth man's home, the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SW ROCU) said.

    The diamond itself is 3.01 carats and described as yellow colour in a ‘radiant’ cut.

    Det Insp Paul Catton from the SW ROCU said: “Paperwork seized with the ring showed it was valued back in 2011 indicating it may have been stolen several years ago."

  15. 'Illegal levels' of air pollution in Exeterpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Analysis of air quality carried out by the Exeter Green Party has revealed additional areas of the city are experiencing "illegal levels" of air pollution.

    The Green Party commissioned nitrogen dioxide monitoring throughout January at sites not currently measured by the city council's own tests.

    Most of the sites were identified by residents concerned by the risk of air pollution in the area.

    In some areas, including around East Wonford Hill and Salutary Mount near Heavitree, the levels of nitrogen dioxide are higher than the legal limit of 40 mg/m3, figures revealed.

    Councillor Rosie Denham - lead councillor for City Transformation, Energy and Transport - said: "We know that air quality in the city is generally good but there are those hot spots where it is poor."

    Exeter City Council is currently carrying out a public consultation on a draft air quality action plan which contains a wide range of proposals to reduce exposure to air pollution and improve health and quality of life.

    A man has had his nose broken after an assault in Fore Street, Bodmin, on Tuesday night.

    The victim, who is in his late 60s, was treated by paramedics just after 22:10, external.

    Police say they believe that witnesses intervened during the attack and they are keen to trace those people.
