    Signs to encourage motorists to slow down in East Devon could be "something to think about" in helping prevent beaver deaths, according to the Devon Wildlife Trust.

    The body of an adult female beaver has been found on a roadside close to the River Otter after being "run over by traffic".

    Steve Hussey, from the charity, said it's always a "good idea" to take care on rural roads.

    Police in Newquay are investigating the discovery of a woman's body on a beach.

    Officers said she was found on Fistral Beach at about 14:50 on Wednesday.

    She has yet to be identified and police are trying to trace her next of kin.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Inquiries are being undertaken to establish how she came to be in the water, but the death is not believed suspicious at this time."

    Organisers of the Fowey Regatta say they have appealed to the RAF to overturn a decision to not have a Red Arrows display in the town this year.

    Harbour commissioners said on Wednesday that they had to make the "bitterly disappointing" announcement that the aerobatic team would not be at the town's air show this year because of cuts in defence spending.

    Business leaders in the town said they could miss out on thousands of visitors because of the decision.

    Fowey Harbour Master Paul Thomas said one solution was to alternate displays with another resort in the South West, which would be "fairer for the organisers [of air days] and more members of the public would get to see them."

    Fowey plans to bid for the team to return in 2019. The Red Arrows are due to perform in Falmouth and at the Torbay Airshow this year.

    As many as 1,000 Sure Start children's centres in England may have closed since August 2009, research for the Sutton Trust suggests.

    In the remaining centres, services for families are "hollowed out" and no longer within "pram-pushing distance".

    The report says there were 3,632 centres in 2009, with official data showing 509 of these have now closed - but it says this is an "underestimate".

    The government says it is determined to improve early years provision.

    A pub in Paignton closed down after what police described as "shocking" behaviour by door staff and its licensee will not be allowed to reopen until police are satisfied it is operating safely, officers say.

    Torbay councillors suspended Winston's licence after being told that 16 crimes associated with the pub in Station Square were committed in 2016, and another 32 in the first 11 months of 2017.

    In an incident last month, a customer at Winston's ended up unconscious on the road and was nearly run over by a coach.

    A solicitor representing the pub said doormen from a different company were now employed and other improvement measures were under way.

    Sergeant Mike Norsworthy, of Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We needed to shut the place down so I can sit own with the owner and hopefully move forward in a more positive fashion."

    A temporary suspension has begun but a full hearing must take place before 27 April.

    Singer-songwriter and Brit Award-winner Ben Howard is to play the Eden Sessions for the third year running, organisers have announced.

    The Totnes-raised musician who studied at Falmouth University will perform on Saturday 30 June with his six-piece band.

    He won both the British Breakthrough Act and British Male Solo Artist categories at the 2013 Brit Awards.

    He joins this year's sessions line-up, external of A Beautiful Day Out, Gary Barlow, Bjork, Jack Johnson, Massive Attack and the Queens of the Stone Age.

    Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service says people should be careful when using chip pans after dealing with an incident in Camborne, external.

    Three crews were called to a blaze at a three-storey block of flats at Gwarder Place at 18:00 on Wednesday.

    The fire service says one hose reel was used to put the fire out and a fan was used to ventilate the property of smoke.

    The incident was confirmed as accidental but the fire service says people need to follow some simple advice when deep-fat drying food.

    • Never fill a chip pan (or other deep-fat fryer) more than one-third full of oil
    • Never leave the pan unattended when the heat is switched on
    • Never put the food in the pan if the oil begins to give off smoke
    • Consider using a thermostatically controlled deep-fat fryer
    • If your pan does catch fire: Don't take any risks
    • Turn off the heat if it's safe to do so
    • Never throw water over it
    • Don't tackle the fire yourself and call 999

    A beaver run over by traffic in Devon may have been close to a road because of recent heavy rains and high river levels, a wildlife trust says.

    The body of the four-year-old adult female beaver was found on a roadside close to the River Otter.

    The Devon Wildlife Trust, external said an autopsy revealed she was "in good health". Beavers in the wild can expect to live to between 12 to 14 years of age.

    The beaver population on the River Otter, which is part of a high profile five-year study, is believed to be the first wild breeding colony to live in England for 400 years, and is thought to consist of about 25 to 30 animals.

    A decision on the long-term future of the animals will be made by the government at the end of the River Otter Beaver Trial, external in 2020.

    Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on a car in Exeter.

    Officers said, external the grey Mini Cooper S was destroyed after its sunroof was smashed while parked in a residential parking bay near the junction of Heather Close and Thornpark Rise at about 01:00 on Monday 2 April.

    A 32-year-old man from Exeter has been arrested on suspicion of arson and released under investigation.
