  9. Cornwall Council can't keep up with potholes 'explosion'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Cornwall Council has said it can't keep up with the number of potholes on the county's roads.

New figures from the RAC show that, nationally, the number of recorded breakdowns due to potholes in the first three months of this year was the third highest since records began in 2006.

Breakdowns likely to be caused by potholes and poor quality road surfaces doubled to 2.3% from 1.2% in the last quarter of 2017 - only the first quarters of 2015 and 2017 were higher.

Geoff Brown, portfolio holder for roads on Cornwall Council, said the authority was supposed to fix rural potholes within a week but that was not happening because there had been an "explosion" of potholes across the county.

    Quote Message

"We had a very wet winter and, in some places, the water has penetrated underneath the top surface. It's then froze and the surface has cracked. We've now had the wettest March in living memory, which has caused a huge amount of potholes, and we're getting reports of about 800 potholes a week."

    Francesca Gould
    BBC News Online

Cornwall councillors voted unanimously yesterday to keep the new reduced fee of £350 for providing residential disabled parking bays in Cornwall.

The cost at the beginning of the year had been £3,800, at which time the council said the cost was for a Traffic Regulation Order, advertising, public consultation and painting the new bay.

It later cut the cost to £3,300 before bringing it down to £350. The council also said anyone who paid higher amounts would be refunded.

Geoff Brown, cabinet member for transport, said: "This means we will be able to offer our disabled residents the opportunity to put in place disabled parking spaces close to their homes, where there is a justified need, at a cost of £350.

"This is in line with or slightly less than many other local authorities. We will continue to work with local disability groups to review our policy and do the very best we can to support our disabled community."

Other safety issues include glass being found on tennis courts, people defecating in bushes, small fires being set and broken bottles on the rugby pitch.
