Launceston College is "committed to raising standards for pupils" at a failing free school say education officials.
On Wednesday it emerged that all eight governors of Route 39 near Bideford had quit in protest at the takeover by Launceston College following a damning report by Ofsted., external
The governors said they had "no confidence" in Launceston's plans for the school.
But a Department for Education (DfE) spokesperson said: “Where any school is not meeting the standards we expect, we will not hesitate to take action to address this and bring about improvements for the young people involved."
The statement added that the DfE was aiming to establish an interim governing board "at the earliest opportunity".
Free schools are independent and paid for by central government, not local authorities as with other state schools.
