    Launceston College is "committed to raising standards for pupils" at a failing free school say education officials.

    On Wednesday it emerged that all eight governors of Route 39 near Bideford had quit in protest at the takeover by Launceston College following a damning report by Ofsted., external

    The governors said they had "no confidence" in Launceston's plans for the school.

    But a Department for Education (DfE) spokesperson said: “Where any school is not meeting the standards we expect, we will not hesitate to take action to address this and bring about improvements for the young people involved."

    The statement added that the DfE was aiming to establish an interim governing board "at the earliest opportunity".

    Free schools are independent and paid for by central government, not local authorities as with other state schools.

    An inquest has heard the death of a 15-year-old girl in Newton Abbot last year was drug-related.

    Leah Kerry from Salisbury died on 16 July 2017 after taking three ecstasy tablets that she'd bought from a local man.

    Jacob Khanlarian, 20, from Newton Abbot, was jailed last year for supplying the drugs.

    Coroner Ian Arrow told the inquest in Torbay he was greatly saddened to have heard of Leah's death and he hoped the publicity will alert other young people to the dangers of drugs.

    A man who helped pay for the return of beavers to Devon has funded a study to look at re-introducing wildcats to the South West.

    The last English wildcat population was wiped out on Exmoor near the River Exe just over a century ago.

    Only a small population now survives in Scotland.

    Financier Ben Goldsmith's commissioned a study to see if a return of the animals is viable.

    A man was knocked unconscious after being "punched in the face" in Kingsteignton, police have said.

    It happened on Gestridge Road between 23:30 and 00:00 on 31 March.

    The 55-year-old victim was found on the pavement by two people who took him home.

    The male offender is described as white, in his mid 20s, about 6ft (182cm) tall with dark hair and an unshaven face.

    Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to contact them via 101.

    A 29-year old-man has gone missing from Tavistock, police have said.

    James Lawson is described as a white male, 6ft 3ins (190cm) tall, of slim build, with short brown hair and a goatee beard. He also walks with a limp.

    He was last seen wearing a navy blue top and dark blue jeans.

    Four people have been arrested after a "quantity of drugs" and a number of weapons were recovered from a house in Axminster, police have said.

    Officers carried out a drugs warrant in the town on Tuesday.

    Police said one woman and three men - all from Axminster - were arrested on "suspicion of concern in the supply of a Class A drug" and were released under investigation pending further inquiries.

    Sgt Karen Bunt said she wants to reassure people that "this criminal activity is not accepted" and is encouraging the local community to report or share any information they have.

    A 17-year-old boy who died in a crash outside a farm in Devon has been named by police.

    George Ogborne died when he crashed outside South Reed Farm at Bratton Clovelly on 15 April.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene, Devon and Cornwall Police, external said.

    His next of kin have been informed and inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact the police via 101.

    Massiyo Makino broke the record at the British National Championships when she lifted more than twice her body weight.

    The 42-year-old mother-of-two is a neonatal nurse at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.
