    People living in a residential area of Totnes have taken matters into their own hands by re-opening a road that's been closed for six weeks.

    Part of a wall collapsed on Maudlin Road during a snow storm, sending tonnes of earth onto a residential street.

    Locals said they were tired of the delays in clearing it and decided enough was enough on Sunday, clearing away rubble themselves.

    Devon County Council said there was a legal wrangle over who was responsible for the maintenance of the wall and that it was a complex issue.

    Police say they are "extremely concerned" for the welfare of a missing 44-year-old man from Paignton.

    Daryl Keenan is described as about 6ft 2ins (1.88m), of stocky build with tattoos on his arms, back, chest and neck.

  10. Broken-down angling boat towed to shorepublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 23 April 2018

    A lifeboat was called out on Sunday to an angling boat off Towan Head, Newquay.

    The 10m-long boat had eight fishermen on board and broke down at about 17:00.

    It was towed back to a mooring and the crew brought to shore.

    No-one was hurt, the RNLI said.

    About 10 sq-km of heathland was damaged by a gorse fire on Dartmoor over the weekend, firefighters say.

    Emergency crews from across Devon were called the blaze on Watern Tor at about 11:05 on Sunday, external to bring it under control.

    Crews created fire breaks and used beaters to extinguish it.

    The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter based in Exeter was called in to assist firefighters.

    Residents said smoke could be "seen for miles" but there was "no threat" to the public, the NPAS said.

    At least 23 residents have been removed from a care home which is being investigated by police over safeguarding concerns.

    NHS Kernow said the elderly people it had responsibility for have been taken out of Sunningdale House in Perranporth.

    The care home has 32 single and two shared rooms, with a mix of NHS and private residents.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We are in the early stages of what is likely to be a protracted and fairly complex investigation."

    Police inquiries are part of a joint investigation with Cornwall Council Adult Safeguarding Services.

    Owner South West Care Homes has replaced the home's management team.

    It said it was working with the Care Quality Commission and the council "to reassure them that the quality of our care has returned to our exacting criteria".

    An 18-year-old woman has died after a crash near a Royal Navy base in Cornwall on Sunday, police say.

    The motorcyclist, who was riding a black Honda 125, hit a silver Toyota Landcruiser at about 12:45 on the A3083, near RNAS Culdrose, Helston.

    The local woman was airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in a coastguard helicopter but died of her injuries.

    The road was closed for just under five hours with an eight-mile diversion in place for an investigation.

    A man is wanted over a suspected sexual assault on a teenager in Plymouth last month, police have said.

    Officers have released an e-fit of a suspect they want to identify.

    The man sat next to the teenager after getting on at Royal Parade and tried to talk to her between 19:15 and 20:00 on 27 March.

    As she got up to leave, he put his arm around her and tried to kiss her. The victim moved away from him and got off the bus.

    The man was described as white with a local accent, in his mid-30s, about 5ft 7ins (1.7m) tall, with blue or green eyes, and wearing a grey beanie hat and carrying a rucksack.

    He had an unkempt appearance with a few teeth missing, smelt strongly of cigarette smoke and had a gravelly, high-pitched voice.

    The RNLI is urging dog walkers in the South West to keep their pets on leads on cliff paths and around shores and rivers, and not to go in the water after them if they get into difficulty.

    Latest figures show there were 120 dog-walking rescues by lifeboat crews around Devon and Cornwall in the four years to 2016.

    Damien Bolt, the senior helm on the Port Isaac lifeboat, has been called to two incidents in the last two years in which dog walkers died.

    • On the A38 Plymouth-bound, just after the Splatford Split, there is a broken-down lorry blocking one lane. Approach with care
    • In Plymouth, on Forder Valley Road, one lane is blocked outbound by a broken-down car
    • On the M5 between the A30 Exminster exit and Exeter Services, traffic is reportedly very slow
    • In Brixham, on the A3022 at Laywell Road, there are temporary traffic lights for the installation of a new crash barrier
    • Traffic is flowing well on the Tamar Bridge. There is up to a 10-minute wait with all three ferries running between Torpoint and Devonport.
