    East Devon District Council's new leader has been described as a "solution finder" by a fellow councillor.

    Councillor Ian Thomas was unanimously elected to become the new leader of the council at the annual council meeting last night.

    The Conservative, who has represented Trinity Ward since 2009 and is a director of the Exeter Science Park Company, replaces Councillor Paul Diviani, who announced that he would be stepping down from his post earlier this year.

    A man from Cornwall who died in the terror attacks in Tunisia in 2015 is among those named on a new memorial, which is to be officially dedicated in a ceremony today.

    Stephen Mellor, 59, from Bodmin in Cornwall, was killed as he attempted to shield his wife Cheryl, 55, who survived the attack.

    The memorial, entitled Still Water, has been created at the National Memorial Arboretum, external in Burton on Trent to remember all those who have died in terror attacks abroad.

    The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will join families of victims of overseas terrorism at the ceremony in Staffordshire later.

    A national rural dementia guide has been launched at the Devon County Show.

    People in rural communities face particular challenges as they often work later in life, are more isolated and find it harder to access support.

    The new guide aims to empower communities to provide people with the support they need.

    Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has been rated at 'good' by the Care Quality Commission , external(CQC).

    It's an improvement from the last inspection in 2016, external, when it was given a 'requires improvement' rating.

    The trust has been marked as "Outstanding" when it comes to being caring and "Good" for being effective, responsive to people's needs and well-led.

    Inspectors from the CQC found particular improvements in end of life care and community heath services for children and young people.

    However, the health watchdog says the trust "Requires Improvement" with regards to safety.

    Police in Barnstaple have praised the government's decision to fund improvements to the North Devon link road.

    It's been confirmed that £83m will be spent upgrading the road.

    Cornwall Council will vote next week on whether to invest in a new road to serve the Duchy of Cornwall's new development , externalon the outskirts of Newquay.

    The council's Cabinet recently agreed to invest £8.7m in the Newquay Strategic Route (NSR) as well as providing the Duchy with a £7.1m loan.

    The road is a major access route for Nansledan, which will see 3,880 homes and a school built by 2030.

    If accepted by full council, work would start on the section of road in May next year and be completed by January 2021.

    The BBC will be hosting an exclusive preview of the fourth series of Poldark in Redruth next month.

    A screening of the first episode of the new series will take place at the Regal Cinema on 5 June.

    Stars of the show, including Eleanor Tomlinson, Jack Farthing and Luke Norris - who play Demelza Poldark, George Warleggan and Dwight Enys - will be attending the screening and will answer questions afterwards.

    It's understood that Poldark Series Four will be broadcast later in June.

    Fans who want to be in the audience can register for tickets via the BBC Shows and Tours website.

    Cars on the North Devon Link Road

    The government has confirmed it is spending £83m upgrading the North Devon Link Road, external and making it safer.

    There have been several fatal crashes on the route in recent months.

    The A371 in Devon

    The multi-million pound plans will pay for widening three sections between Barnstaple and South Molton, with two lanes of travel in one direction and a single lane in the opposite direction.

    The extra lane will help provide safer overtaking opportunities and make average journeys on the route more reliable.

    Upgrades to a number of junctions and improved connections will also provide a much needed boost to North Devon as a place to do business.

    The North Devon Link Road comprises the A39/A361 from the M5 Junction 27 to Abbotsham Cross Roundabout.

    As hundreds of primary school pupils sit their SATs exams this week, teachers in Cornwall are finding ways of helping them cope with the pressure.

    Special breakfast clubs and yoga sessions are being laid on in an attempt to take away any exam stress the 10 and 11-year-olds might be feeling.
