  2. Repair work at car park to go ahead after 'contamination'published at 08:43 British Summer Time 18 May 2018

    Contaminated material found at Dawlish Countryside Park, which delayed work needed to repair the surface of the car park, has been confirmed as elevated sulphates in the soil.

    Work was due to begin last week and is needed because of the large numbers of visitors and recent poor weather conditions, which has caused the tarmac to deteriorate.

    The resurfacing will now start on Tuesday, 29 May and the project is expected to take up to two weeks to complete.

    It will be split into three phases to reduce the loss of parking spaces.

    A call for a "people's vote" on a final Brexit deal is being backed by students in Falmouth and Exeter.

    An open letter to parliament coordinated by campaign group For Our Future's Sake has been signed by elected student leaders across the UK.

    There are plans for a march in London on 23 June but Theresa May has been clear that another referendum would be an undemocratic breach of trust with the British people who voted Leave.

    Dean Pomeroy, a student union representative at Falmouth University, says many people on campus did not get to have a say.

    "I think it's really important that, regardless of whether you're Remain or Leave, you understand what the Brexit deal entails, so that then we can try and work out if that's the best way of moving forward."

    A local authority in Cornwall is seeking advice over its plans to build a skate park, after being threatened with legal action.

    Perranzabuloe Parish Council has spent more than £35,000 on getting planning permission for the development at Perranporth, and had hoped to start building on the site at Bolenna Field in the autumn.

    But some local people are opposed to the chosen site, claiming a covenant on the field prevents it from being developed into a skate park.

    They say they are willing to challenge the plans through the courts.

    Peter Gaisford has been fighting for a skate facility at Perranporth for the past 14 years, and says the project has the support of most of the village, and it is the will of the people for the development to go ahead.

    "It's up to our elected representatives to either back the community or we're going to be waiting for years again," he said.

    The number of food safety inspections being made in Torbay has been reduced because of budget cuts.

    An internal audit of food safety, safety and licensing by the council raised concerns about a relatively low percentage of planned inspections.

    Auditors said the current budget was not sufficient, and the amount of work being done had been reduced because of cuts.

    They said improvements to the service were needed, something the council is pledged to implement during the coming 12 months.

    The Samaritans in Cornwall have welcomed the government's decision to limit the maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals to £2.

    Ministers say the move will reduce harm to people who can currently bet up to £100 every 20 seconds.

    Bookmakers say it will lead to job losses in the industry.

    Richard Sutton from the charity says gambling is an addiction.

    "Quite often you find that people who are addicted to gambling are also alcoholics," he said. "The compulsions can obviously lead to financial problems, they can lead to health problems and relationship problems.

    "One in five people who are really addicted to gambling also have suicidal thoughts."

    It's been a busy night for fightfighters in Devon.

    In Plymouth, three crews were called to a garage on fire on Cheltenham Place , externaljust before 22:30.

    Fire engines from Greenbank and Camels Head Community Fire Stations attended the blaze, and it was out by midnight.

    Meanwhile, two crews from Exeter were called to a report of agricultural machinery on fire, external at Shillingford Abbot near Exeter at about 20:15.

    They found a large compressor on fire, but were able to put it out before it could spread to a nearby fuel tank.
