    An improved scheme for plans for 202 new homes on the edge of Newton Abbot has been given the go-ahead.

    Last April, a planning inspector allowed Linden Homes to build 203 homes at the site located off Exeter Road and Whitehill Road.

    The scheme had been rejected by Teignbridge District Council planners initially, who said that the plans were unacceptable when judged against its local plan.

    The Secretary of State considered that the appeal scheme was in accordance with policies of the development plan, and is in accordance with the development plan overall and allowed their appeal.

    However, a revised and improved scheme for the site had already been submitted to planners, and it was given the go-ahead by council planners last week.

    The owner of a care home in Perranporth that has been rated as inadequate with "systemic failings" says it hopes to provide care at the home in the future.

    There are currently no residents at Sunningdale House after they were withdrawn last month due to safeguarding concerns. Police are also investigating.

    Today the Care Quality Commission has published a report, external highlighting a range of issues, including a risk of cross infection, badly trained staff and poor monitoring of medication.

    South West Care Homes said the home was being refurbished and would be reclassified as "dormant".

    Cornwall Council has been ordered to apologise and pay £1,000 compensation to the mother of a schoolboy over faults in how his special needs were reviewed.

    The Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) upheld the complaint from the mother saying the council had caused injustice.

    The boy, who can't be named, has social, communication and learning difficulties associated with autistic spectrum disorder. The council had arranged his education under a statement of SEN since he was four and he had attended a mainstream primary school.

    After moving to secondary school, the mother was dissatisfied with the care and education he was receiving and raised concerns, followed by a formal complaint.

    The LGO said the council had missed statutory requirements and there was a "severe delay" in issuing a final amended plan, leading to "a period of prolonged suspense and uncertainty".

    Cornwall Council has been approached for a comment.

    Police investigations have been completed on the A30 near Daisy Mount Cross after a fatal crash but the road remains closed while a carriageway clean-up is under way.

    Highways England said the road was likely to remain closed for a further hour.

    A man has died in a crash on the A30 at about 07:00 on Monday, near Daisy Mount Cross.

    Police said the man, who was in his 20s, was driving a white van which crashed into a roadside barrier.

    One of the passengers "sustained possible life-changing injuries", according to police, and three others have "serious injuries".

    The eastbound carriageway has been closed between Clyst Honiton and Daisy Mount Cross and is expected to reopen shortly.

    Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 101.

    Preparations are beginning for Devon's big sporting bank holiday weekend in London.

    The Exeter Chiefs will face Saracens in rugby union's Premiership final at Twickenham on Saturday and on bank holiday Monday, Exeter City take on Coventry in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

    Defending rugby champions Exeter reached their third successive Premiership final with a dominant win over first-time semi-finalists Newcastle.

    The Grecians, meanwhile, beat Lincoln City to reach Wembley for a second successive season.

    A care home in Perranporth has been rated as inadequate overall after inspectors found "systemic failings".

    Among failings at Sunningdale House identified by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) were a "higher than expected number of deaths".

    The CQC also said "medical concerns [were] not being escalated to health professionals in a timely manner putting residents at risk".

    Last month, Cornwall Council removed its residents from the home after concerns were raised over the quality of care and the owners, South West Care Homes, replaced the management team.

    Devon and Cornwall Police have also been investigating safeguarding concerns.

    In celebration of the royal wedding, Cornish charity Surfers Against Sewage, external commissioned a piece of sand art to congratulate the newlyweds.

    SAS was chosen as one of seven charities to benefit from the donations marking the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday.

    The video below shows the 30ft artwork created by Ed Stanbury on Lusty Glaze beach in Newquay.

    The charity also created a wooden traditional belly-board to celebrate the day, crafted by James Otter from locally-sourced wood.
