    Plans for a large student flats and shops development, which would see the demolition of a shopping arcade in Exeter's independent shopping quarter, have drawn the backing of council planning officers.

    The Lagoon Estates scheme would see 55 "high-quality" student studios built over four floors on the site of the City Arcade in Fore Street.

    Despite planning officers saying the loss of the retail floorspace is "regrettable", the scheme, which goes before Exeter City Council planners on 25 June, is recommended for approval

    No parking spaces are included as part of the application.

    A 120-year-old trawler has just received a brand new set of sails, thanks to a generous donation from a long-term volunteer.

    The Shamrock is now owned by the National Trust at Cotehele but was once used to transport stone from nearby quarries.

    It's currently undergoing massive restoration, with extensive work needed after it was discovered the vessel had rotten wood.

    It's hoped it will be back on the water by March 2019.

  4. 'Concerted action' needed to improve waste collectionpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    Conservative MP for Torbay, Kevin Foster says there needs to be "concerted action" to improve the problems with waste collection in the area.

    Local people have been complaining of "later and later" collections with some claiming they've not had bins collected for up to three weeks.

    Torbay Council and the Kier Group, which run the service, admit they've had problems with the bin lorries and a shortage of drivers.

    A Jersey bomb disposal expert believes more bombs from the time of the occupation in World War Two will be found on the islands as local people become increasingly interested in metal detecting.

    It comes as three unexploded mortar bombs were found on a beach near St Aubin's Fort pier. They were destroyed by experts.

    A female car passenger airlifted to hospital in Plymouth with suspected serious injuries from a crash on the A30 at Hayle suffered a minor arm injury, police say.

    The woman, in her 50s and from Penzance, was a passenger in a BMW 5 series car involved in the crash with a Ford Transit van on the road at Loggans at about 14:30 on Tuesday.

    Officers said, external the BMW's driver, a man in his 70s from Penzance, and the driver of the van, a male in his 20s from Redruth, were both taken to hospital in Truro with minor injuries.

    The road was closed for about four-and-a-half hours for an investigation. Police have appealed for witnesses.

    University of Exeter has apologised after its career service accidentally used a motivational quote from a Nazi general in an internal email.

    The messages to staff and students regularly contain inspirational quotations, but on this occasion the one selected was from Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (pictured centre) - the World War Two general also known as the Desert Fox - the Falmouth Packet reported, external.

    Over a backdrop of waves, the quote was: "One cannot permit unique opportunities to slip by for the sake of trifles."

    A spokesman for the university, which has campuses in Devon and Cornwall, said an individual had used a website to find the motivational message but unfortunately didn't recognise the name attributed to it.

    It added that it was a genuine error and it apologised unreservedly for any offence it may have caused, saying procedures were in place to ensure it would not happen again.

    Jersey's Scott Clayton will play at Wimbledon next month after being given a wildcard in the men's doubles.

    Clayton, who is ranked 117 in the world doubles rankings, and partner Liam Broady will enter the first round at the All England Club.

    Clayton made history last year when he became the first Jersey man to ever play at the Championships - he and partner Jonny O'Mara made the second round where they lost to top seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers in straight sets.

    A nightclub opened in a phone box is locked up every night - because the owners don’t have a licence.

    Kingsbridge Town Council turned the phone box into what is thought to be the world’s smallest nightclub to raise money for charity.

    But it doesn’t have an entertainment licence from South Hams District Council to open it at night, and that means it’s shackled shut from 23:00 until 08:00.

    Nighclubs and festivals in Jersey will now accept identification on a mobile phone using the Yoti app as official ID.

    It was announced in March that Yoti had been chosen as the official digital ID provider for the States of Jersey.

    The first nightclubs to accept Yoti include Ce Soir, Rojo, Havana and Tanguys. Islanders will also be able to use Yoti as proof of ID at the Weekender Festival and Out There events.

    A university's career advice service accidentally sent students an email which contained a motivational quote from Nazi general Erwin Rommel, external.

  15. Man charged after robberies in Plymouthpublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    Police have charged a man after two armed robberies in Plymouth.

    Officers said they were called to reports of an armed man threatening staff at the Co-Op store in the Mutley area at about 22:00 on Monday. A second robbery took place at the Spar store on North Hill at about 03:35 on Tuesday.

    Two men were arrested.

    A 29-year-old from the North Road West area has been charged with two counts of robbery and is due before Plymouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

    A 43-year-old man also arrested has been released with no further action to be taken.

    Jersey Dairy insists it has not changed its packaging, despite dozens of islanders taking to social media to complain about difficulties opening their milk cartons.

    Managing director Eamon Fenlon says the problems people are facing could be due to the glue and that they would monitor the situation.

    Carol Hinault said: "We use the 'blue' milk and are finding the pack hard to open, also, when it has been used a few times the spout becomes soft and has to be trimmed in order to pour the milk into the cup rather than on the table."

    Vicky Ovenden said: "I thought it was just me I find I usually have to prize them open with a knife!"

    Barnstaple's Craig Overton has been added to the England one-day squad for the final two one-day international with Australia.

    The 24-year-old Somerset all-rounder has been called up alongside Surrey's Sam Curran from the England Lions squad.

    Overton made his test debut during England's unsuccessful Ashes series in Australia in the winter and was part of the squad for the one-day series in New Zealand earlier this year.

    A Jersey advocate has criticised the appointment of a former head of a UK council to a top job in the island.

    Mark Rogers is the interim Director General of the new Children, Young People, Education and Skills Department.

    He previously led Birmingham City Council, which was described as failing its children in an Ofsted report.

    Advocate Rose Colley, former member of the Jersey Appointments Commission, said the island is becoming a "haven for failed UK local government chiefs".

    Mr Rogers said Birmingham council had been under special measures for 10 years before he took over and within two years half of its services had been improved enough for disciplinary control to be removed.

    A businessman who photographed so-called beggars in Torbay has said "there should be nobody homeless in Torbay anymore" after he opened a bed and breakfast to help combat the problem.

    Ashley Sims says he has 27 bedrooms and he plans to provide temporary accommodation to those living on the streets.

    Earlier this year, he outraged some, including Torbay Council, by photographing - and making public - images of people he thought were professional beggars, rather than genuinely homeless.

    Torbay Council plans to spend a £279,785 grant from the government to tackle rough sleeping in the Bay.
