    Some council tax payers in parts of the South West could possibly end up paying more for policing if a proposed merger between the Devon & Cornwall and Dorset forces goes ahead.

    Police bosses see it "as the only way forward" amid funding challenges.

    Approval for the plan is required from the government. If it is backed, it would also create the fifth biggest force in England.

    A public survey on the plans starts on Friday and the police commissioner for Devon and Cornwall, Alison Hernandez (pictured), said it was important people in the three different counties paid the same for policing, which could see some households seeing their council tax precept increase.

    Average contributions to police in Devon and Cornwall are currently £18 a year less than in Dorset.

    However, she added that she believed people would be prepared to pay more, and that she would not support the merger plan until she has heard what taxpayers thought.

    One person has been taken to hospital by the coastguard helicopter after having a "medical episode" while trying to rescue a woman who had got stuck on rocks.

    The incident happened at West Portholland beach on the Roseland just before 14:00.

    Seven people had to be rescued by the Portscatho and Mevagissey coastguard team and the duty area coastal officer, after attempting to rescue the lady.

    Four months ago the south west was in the midst of a series of heavy snow showers that left a deep covering of the white stuff over much of the region.

    Today we are in the midst of a heatwave... and the photos below show what a difference four months make.

    The top picture of Lemon Quay in Truro below was taken on 28 February, and the one below on 28 June.

    These two images show a beautiful garden at Colaton Raleigh in the Otter Valley.

    The top one was taken on 28 February when there was heavy snowfall across Devon and Cornwall.

    The bottom picture was taken this morning, on 28 June, four months later, as we enjoy the current run of sunshine.

    New figures show the population of the UK rose by nearly 400,000 people last year to just over 66 million.

    The Office for National Statistics said it's the first time the population has exceeded 66 million, but the 0.6% increase is the lowest growth rate since 2004.

    Despite a 0.8% rise in the population of south-west England (5,559,316), the Isles of Scilly population was down by 3% - the biggest percentage drop in the UK.

    Torquay United left-back Liam Davis has agreed a new contract with the club.

    The 31-year-old, who first joined a year ago, played 33 times last season as the club were relegated to National League South for the first time in their history.

    "The disappointment of going down, for me personally, is a failure, so staying with a new goal of promotion, that is something that me that the whole squad can get their teeth into," he said.

    “Last season is done now, and you can’t dwell on it. You have to live in the present and look forward to the future. That’s what we’re going to be doing as a squad."

    Police are appealing for witnesses to an "unprovoked" assault in Exmouth last month, which left a man needing surgery.

    The incident happened on Monday, 7 May, at about 03:30 outside the TSB bank on The Strand, when the victim - a man in his 20s - was assaulted by two men who punched and pushed him to the ground before kicking him in the head.

    Investigating officer, Suzie Quinton, said: "This was an unprovoked attack which left the victim requiring surgery for injuries to his hand.

    "We know that there were lots of people in the vicinity at the time of the incident and I’d ask anyone who was in the area at the time, or has any information to get in touch with police."

  14. No cash option could cause 'bedlam' in Mevagisseypublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 28 June 2018

    A Mevagissey car park owner says there could be "bedlam" in the town if the option for visitors to use cash was taken away.

    It comes as a new report warns many more bank branches could close with the big banks saying fewer people are walking through the doors for face-to-face transactions.

    Since 2015, 46 branches have closed in Cornwall and in the wider South West, 327 have closed their doors.

    Matthew Facey who runs the Willow car park now travels to St Austell to bank his cash and says whilst he does bank online, his business is largely cash-based and card payments aren't foolproof...

    Police say they're concerned for the welfare of an Ilfracombe man who's been reported missing.

    Searches are under way for Matthew Lucas, 30, who was last seen at about midday.

    Mr Lucas, who is about 5ft 5in (1.65m) tall, of slim build with short brown hair and a beard, has a number of tattoos on his neck and arms.

    Anyone who sees him or knows of his whereabouts is urged to call police via the emergency 999 number.
