  2. Labour calls for debate over Torbay Council's futurepublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 28 June 2018

    Labour has called for a parliamentary debate on the future of Torbay Council, after Mayor Gordon Oliver said there was no money left.

    The Conservative-run authority is considering ending its "unitary status" and becoming a district council again because of financial pressures.

    Valerie Vaz, the shadow leader of the House of Commons has demanded a government statement on the issue.

    A new £3m station for electric trams has been officially opened in Devon.

    Seaton Tramway, which is run by a charity, is said to contribute millions of pounds to the local economy with some 90,000 visitors travelling on its 13 trams every year.

    A pair of twin lynx cubs have been born at Newquay Zoo.

    Staff told the BBC they were delighted at the arrival of the Eurasian lynx kittens.

    Senior carnivore keeper, Mike Downman, who cares for the cubs, said he was "over the moon".

    The secretive animals prefer hiding in dense shrubs and bushes, often only appearing at dusk and dawn.

    The two kittens have been seen playing with each other and their older sister, Tink, who was born in May last year.

    A man from Cornwall who admitted possessing extreme pornographic images of animals has been given a suspended prison sentence.

    Mark Clift-Matthews, 36, of Treloweth Road, Pool, also pleaded guilty to possessing 248 indecent photographs and videos of children, some as young as five.

    Judge Robert Linford told Truro Crown Court that the material found on Clift-Matthews' computer was "sickening".

    Clift-Matthews was given a 16-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, a two-year community order and a sexual harm prevention order. He was also ordered to complete a 30-day rehabilitation programme as well as a 120 hours of community service, and pay a £500 victim surcharge.

    An alleged racially-aggravated assault is being investigated by police in Plymouth.

    A family enjoying an evening on the Hoe on Friday were approached by a large group of about 20 teenagers at about 22:00.

    After verbally abusing the family, some of the group of boys and girls - aged about 14 - began punching and pushing the father and son.

    One teenager threw a drink over the mother and the group also stole one of the family’s sun hats and tried to take the son’s phone.

    Officers are urgently seeking information from anyone who was on the Hoe or witnesses the incident.

    The BBC's popular political debate programme - Question Time - is coming to Exeter.

    One-hundred local audience members will be quizzing government representatives, including Brexit minister Suella Braverman and shadow treasury minister Clive Lewis, about current issues.

    Janet Street-Porter, Helen Lewis and Johan Eliasch will also be on the show.

    It's being filmed at Exeter University's Northcott Theatre.

    An Exeter man has become one of the Tower of London's famous beefeaters after becoming the 409th Yeoman Warder since records began in the 19th Century.

    Scott Kelly takes on the role following a 23-year military career in the Army Air Corps.

    After a period of training, the father-of-two will take part in 21 separate duties, including the Ceremony of the Keys, which has taken place every night at the Tower of London for more than 700 years.

    Yeoman Warders are descended from the ancient warders who guarded the gates and royal prisoners, early in the tower's history and today's warders are still "extraordinary members" of the Queen's bodyguard.

    Describing it as a "huge honour", Yeoman Warder Kelly said: "As a country boy, it still feels surreal that I now live in one of London's most iconic landmarks."

    The origins of the warders more common beefeater title are unclear, although it's alleged they were originally paid partly with chunks of beef.

    A report on the future of banking has praised a Cornish town for the way its residents have coped with the loss of all its banks.

    Mevagissey's one remaining bank closed last year, but the community fought to get the local Post Office reopened with banking services, while the local car park owner offers coins and change to businesses in the town.

    Forty-six bank branches have closed in Cornwall in the past three years and David Black, who co-authored the Future of Bank and Building Society Branches in the UK report, warns that nearly 2,500 more bank and building society's could close this year.

    Mevagissey councillor James Mustoe says other towns who face the same situation should fight back.

    Prince Charles's annual income from his hereditary Duchy of Cornwall estate has increased by 5% to more than £21m.

    His tax bill has risen by 2% from £4,757,000 to £4,854,000 in 2017-2018.

    As heir to the throne, Charles is entitled to the surplus generated by the Duchy's vast portfolio of lands, buildings and financial investments - which includes the Oval cricket ground and 67,000 acres of Dartmoor.

    A Cornish waste disposal company has been ordered to pay £26,000 in fines and costs for illegally handling and dumping hazardous waste.

    Glebe Quarry Limited which trades as 1st Call Skips from its base in Roche, will also have to pay £17,000 in compensation to the local farmer whose land it contaminated with asbestos waste.

    The cost to clean up the asbestos contamination was nearly £120,000

    The company, which operates a permitted waste transfer station near St Austell, pleaded guilty last December to a total of five separate offences at three separate locations, including its own site, a nearby farm and a site operated by company, Imerys.

    A specially designed boat has been launched by a "man on a mission" to clear plastics from local waters.

    Gary Jolliffe, who runs a community-based project in South Devon, called Till The Coast Is Clear, has raised £20,000 for the craft, which gathers plastic rubbish from the water for recycling.
