    We have been sent in these photos after raiders - said to be wearing Halloween masks - fled with thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from a shop in Tiptree this morning.

    Two robbers used a tool to smash their way into a cabinet at Cartouche in The Centre at about 10:00, police said.

    They are appealing for witnesses to the raid, with the robbers spotted fleeing the scene in a black Mercedes C220.

    Officers have been looking at CCTV footage from the area.

    Arkadiusz Jozwik, 40, was attacked outside a row of takeaways on Saturday night and died in hospital on Monday.

    Det Ch Insp Martin Pasmore said: "We've got the dispersal order in place around the area of The Stow, so that's going on 24/7, so there's an increased police patrol around there. 

    "It is,of course, about giving reassurance to the community that we are there."

  3. Health watchdog helping Grafton Surgery patientspublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    The health watchdog has said it is working to make sure patients at Grafton Surgery can find alternative care. 

    The surgery, in Canvey Island, had its appeal to win back its licence thrown out by a judge after a magistrate withdrew its registration in June after visits by the Care Quality Commission, external (CQC) revealed a series of failings.

    In a statement, the CQC said it was taking "action to protect the safety welfare of patients". 

    "CQC is working closely with Castle Point and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS England to ensure any patients of the surgery have access to alternative GP services." 

    It said it could not divulge any further details but would publish a full report in "due course".

  4. Canvey GP surgery fails court appealpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    A judge has thrown out an appeal by a doctors' surgery to win back its licence after she ruled its failures could risk patients' lives.

    The Grafton Surgery, external, in Canvey Island, had its registration cancelled by a magistrate in June after a series of visits by health watchdog Care Quality Commission, external revealed problems.

    These included a "bullying and blame culture", inadequate follow-up procedures for cervical cancer smear test patients and poor monitoring of some patients on drug regimes.

    Appealing against the decision before the Care Standards Tribunal, external, the surgery's registered manager, Dr Saia Noorah, argued it was unnecessary. She admitted the surgery had faced serious problems, but said it should have been given two months to make improvements and disputed some allegations.

    However, Judge Meleri Tudur confirmed the "urgent cancellation" of the surgery's registration and ruled the failings admitted by Dr Noorah were enough to cause "serious risk to patients' life, health or well-being".

    Castle Point and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group says the surgery remains open under caretaker management.

    An Essex postbox unofficially painted gold in honour of an Olympic gold medallist will be repainted red, the Royal Mail, external has said.

    It is not clear who decorated the box beside Blackwater Estuary on Mersea Island where Rio Olympics' sailing champion Saskia Clark learnt to sail.

    Postboxes were painted gold in 2012 in recognition of athlete's gold-winning achievements at the London Olympics.

    The Royal Mail said it was up to host nation Rio to celebrate its own games.

    Firefighters have been working with the Environment Agency, external to stop any pollution from a huge wood pile blaze in Nazeing. 

    Four fire engines have been at the scene this morning tackling the blaze in the 2,500-tonne mound after a call was received about 05:25 yesterday.

    An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, external spokeswoman said the blaze at a wood recycling centre in Hoe Lane is expected to continue to "burn for some time" and also involves wood chippings.

    "I know one line of the investigation by the police was that it might have been a hate crime, it remains to be seen what were the reasons. 

    "I hope it will never happen again, but yes, this will pose a question mark in many families, Polish families, in Great Britain."

    Faith leaders, campaigners and people from the Polish community were among those who turned out to pay tribute to Arkadiusz Jozwik in a candlelit vigil last night at The Stow shopping precinct where he was fatally attacked.

    Sylwia Karwacka, 31, of the town, stood with friends bearing a Polish flag. "He was my friend. We do nothing wrong and I don't understand why young people would attack Polish people," she said.

    "We live the same as everyone. We work, we pay tax."

    Police have said the attack may have bee racially motivated, but it is just one of their lines of inquiry.

    A friend of Arkadiusz Jozwik, killed after an unprovoked attack in Harlow, has said he was a quiet guy, and a family man who loved football.

    Mr Jozwik died in hospital two days after the assault at The Stow on Saturday night. Police think there were about 13 people there at the time. 

    One of the 40-year old's friends, who did not want to be named, said he was shocked when he came across the aftermath at the scene as he travelled home following his nightshift.

    "It’s devastating for me as a friend – I can’t imagine how his mummy and brother are feeling," he told BBC Essex.

    A senior police officer has told BBC Essex while many of the media headlines suggest the fatal attack on Arkadiusz Jozwik was a hate crime, the motive isn't yet clear and we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

    He said: "It's concerning that the widespread media are reporting this as a hate crime, when in fact that is no more than one line of inquiry in a number of inquiries, which we are delving into to try an establish the truth, to establish that sequence of events that led to Mr Jozwik's tragic death."
