    A dry start to the night across the BBC East region with temperatures initially falling to 2C (36F). 

    Cloud and rain will then spread eastwards and temperatures will rise to about 8C (46F) by morning.

    Wednesday is generally looking cloudy with outbreaks of rain, but the further north you are the more likely you are to see sunshine and brightness. 

    Temperatures climbing to around 12C (54F), but they’ll perhaps reach a couple of degrees higher in the best of any sunshine.

    We've been covering the unveiling today of a wall mosaic, called The Gift of Life, at Colchester General Hospital to honour people who donate organs.

    Jan Smith, chair of the Organ Donation Committee, said: “I can think of no gift greater or more humane than that of donated organs or tissue which are used to transform and, in many cases, save the lives of desperately-ill people.”

    The committee was established in 2009 to raise awareness and understanding of organ donation, both within the NHS and externally.

  6. MP speaks out over housing benefit 'dependency' and 'unfairness' published at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2017

    The MP for South Suffolk says young people could be forgiven for feeling aggrieved over plans to stop 18 to 21-year-olds from claiming housing benefit.

    James Cartlidge was speaking in response to calls by Labour's shadow housing minister John Healey for Caroline Nokes, the Works and Pensions Minister, to press the chancellor for a U-turn on the policy, external in Wednesday's budget.

    Mr Cartlidge said "nipping the dependency culture in the bud" was "very important", but suggested young people could be forgiven for feeling aggrieved.

    He said: "But I have to say one thing... but when we do this and we protect every single penny going to pensioners including a winter fuel allowance for millionaires in mortgage-free mansions just because they are over 65, they [younger people] will be forgiven for thinking we are not playing fairly to everybody."

    A spectacular 20ft (6m) long wall mosaic, designed to recognise the act of kindness of those who donate their organs, has been unveiled at Colchester General Hospital.

    The Organ Donation Committee at the hospital commissioned the artwork, which is called The Gift of Life.

    It has been created by Colchester-based sculptor and mosaic artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding and incorporates a poem by Wivenhoe-based poet and musician Martin Newell.

    Based on the Essex coastline with its rivers and estuaries, The Gift of Life is made from fragments from hundreds of items of crockery as well as jewellery, buttons and beach glass donated by people from all over north east Essex.

    Anne chose the coastline as symbolic of the river of life. The ebb and flow of the tide, like breathing, is about giving and receiving – which is exactly what organ donation is.

    The artwork incorporates some of the features and wildlife of north east Essex, including a seagull, hare, avocet, heron and two brent geese.

    She said: “It has been a wonderful project to be a part of."

  8. RSPCA says Colchester dog was found in 'horrific state'published at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2017

    The  RSPCA, external  says an emaciated Jack Russell puppy called Munchkin found wandering the streets in Colchester was in an "horrific state" says inspector Kate Fletcher.

    "Poor little Munchkin... it broke my heart," she added.

    "She was emaciated with signs of mange and riddled with fleas - and on top of this had these awful wounds all over her.

    "There are signs of teeth marks, so we are pretty sure they were caused by dog bites.

    "She must have been in such pain for quite some time, as the vet thinks they had been there for at least a month given the state of her flesh.

    "In some ways she was lucky - just a fraction deeper and the wound would have reached her spinal column which would have been been life threatening.

    "As it is she is doing well and we hope she will make a good recovery after surgery."

  10. Prize-winner claims £1m Southend jackpotpublished at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2017

    The National Lottery operator, Camelot, says a £1m prize ticket - that was bought in Southend - has now been claimed.

    It was from the Euromillions draw on 4 October last year. 

    Camelot says it's delighted that the winner has now come forward after it publicised the fact no-one had claimed it last week.

  11. More than 30 jobs likely to go in Budgen closures in Essexpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2017

    Earlier, we reported plans by Budgens to close 34 stores across the UK with  the loss of more than 800 jobs

    We have now learnt that more than 30 Essex jobs are being effected by the closures.

    Administrators - who were appointed last month - have failed to find a buyer for the firm. Two stores in Essex - Rochford and South Benfleet - are being shut down.

    Animal charity the RSPCA, external is appealing for information after an emaciated Jack Russell puppy with infected dog-bite wounds along her neck, body and head was found wandering the streets alone.

    The RSPCA was called on Saturday after Munchkin (pictured), a female Jack Russell thought to be just under a year old, was discovered on Tey Road in Earl's Colne, near Colchester. 

    She was in an extremely neglected state and the injuries were so severe she will need skin grafts and potentially the removal of part of her ear in order to recover.

    The dog was taken to Catley Cross Vets in Halstead, where she was placed on a drip and given intensive treatment for the wounds. 

    It is hoped she will make a full recovery and be available for rehoming after this.

  15. Body found in Carl Matthams missing person searchpublished at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2017

    The search for missing man Carl Matthams has been suspended following the discovery of a man’s body near the seawall in Mayland on the Dengie Peninsula.The body was found by police at about 11:30 today. His death is not being treated as suspicious.No formal identification has taken place yet, but Mr Matthams’ family has been updated and the police search suspended.

    We've been following the story of a shirt signed by Essex double Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock being auctioned off to raise money for the Mayor of Basildon's chosen charities.

    Whitlock, who presented it to the Mayor of Basildon David Harrison (pictured), said: "The community in Basildon has given me a massive amount of support and encouragement, so a signed top from our team is just a way of giving back.

    "This is about the whole team and we are all delighted with the support we get from the local area. 

    "If this can help the community in any way, then I would be very happy."

    A shirt signed by double Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock will be auctioned off to raise money for the Mayor of Basildon’s chosen charities.

    The Team GB shirt, which was worn during last summer’s Rio Olympics, has been signed by five leading members of the South Essex Gymnastics Club, which trains at Basildon Sporting Village. As well as Olympic champion Max, team-mates Brinn Bevan, Amy Tinkler, Reiss Beckford and Gaius Thompson have also signed the shirt.

    David Harrison, Mayor of Basildon, said: “I’m extremely grateful to the club for its generosity, which adds to the outstanding response we have had from the entire community during this year of fundraising.” The money raised by the auction will go towards the Mayor’s two chosen charities – the Wagtail Children’s Ward at Basildon Hospital and Lukes Counselling Service, which is operated by St Luke’s Hospice.

    Essex Police say they're concerned about a man missing from his home in Mayland on the Dengie Peninsula.

    Carl Matthams was last seen early yesterday morning.

    He's described as 6ft 8in tall, of muscular build with tattoos on his right arm.

    He is believed to be wearing black jogging bottoms and a black T-shirt. Carl has links to the Wickford area.
