A spectacular 20ft (6m) long wall mosaic, designed to recognise the act of kindness of those who donate their organs, has been unveiled at Colchester General Hospital.
The Organ Donation Committee at the hospital commissioned the artwork, which is called The Gift of Life.
It has been created by Colchester-based sculptor and mosaic artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding and incorporates a poem by Wivenhoe-based poet and musician Martin Newell.
Based on the Essex coastline with its rivers and estuaries, The Gift of Life is made from fragments from hundreds of items of crockery as well as jewellery, buttons and beach glass donated by people from all over north east Essex.
Anne chose the coastline as symbolic of the river of life. The ebb and flow of the tide, like breathing, is about giving and receiving – which is exactly what organ donation is.
The artwork incorporates some of the features and wildlife of north east Essex, including a seagull, hare, avocet, heron and two brent geese.
She said: “It has been a wonderful project to be a part of."

The RSPCA, external says an emaciated Jack Russell puppy called Munchkin found wandering the streets in Colchester was in an "horrific state" says inspector Kate Fletcher.
"Poor little Munchkin... it broke my heart," she added.
"She was emaciated with signs of mange and riddled with fleas - and on top of this had these awful wounds all over her.
"There are signs of teeth marks, so we are pretty sure they were caused by dog bites.
"She must have been in such pain for quite some time, as the vet thinks they had been there for at least a month given the state of her flesh.
"In some ways she was lucky - just a fraction deeper and the wound would have reached her spinal column which would have been been life threatening.
"As it is she is doing well and we hope she will make a good recovery after surgery."
