  7. MP calls for HMS Colchesterpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

The MP for Colchester has made an appeal in the House of Commons for one of the Navy's new frigates to be named after the town.

Will Quince told Defence Secretary Michael Fallon: "We've waited patiently since 1746."

The government has announced plans to build five new type 31 e- class frigates and there is a long tradition of naming Royal Navy ships after towns and counties.

The last HMS Colchester sank in the North Sea almost 300 years ago and there have been various campaigns over the years to have another ship named after the town.

Mr Quince said when he recently asked if one of the new type 26 frigates could be named HMS Colchester, "I got a very polite and pleasant response from the undersecretary of state saying 'no', but I am nothing but persistent."

Mr Fallon said he would bear in mind his request.

"If he's waited since 1746 perhaps he can wait a little longer."

  8. Essex vineyard first to harvest for 2017 seasonpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

An Essex vineyard has started its grape harvest - believed to be the first in the country this year.

The first grapes at Mersea Island Vineyard were picked on Tuesday.

The harvest was brought forward several weeks because of the unpredictable weather throughout the spring and summer.

Winemaker Ben Bunting said: "We were expecting the harvest to be advanced, but with grapes ready at Mersea Island Vineyard in the first week of September, this marks our earliest harvest ever and we believe picking at the Mersea vineyard heralds the start of the UK harvest.

"The sugar levels are holding well and it looks like it should be a good year for Essex wine."

Dedham Vale Vineyard has planted over 20 new acres of vines to meet future demand for their English Sparkling Wine.

  10. Have badgers caused bridge damage?published at 16:45 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

    Sarah Jenkins
    BBC Local Live

It's thought badger setts living near a bridge in South Woodham Ferrers may have caused it to subside.

One side of the bridge on Ferrers Road has started to collapse, Essex County Council said.

Badgers are living nearby and Chris Teeder, chairman of the Essex Badger Protection Group, external, says it's not unusual for the animals to cause damage.

"We do have occasional incidents of that sort of thing happening, badgers undermining roads and causing damage to property, it's not too uncommon," he said.

"Badgers are being forced out of their normal habitats by all the development going on, so they have to find other places to live."

A spokesperson from Essex Highways said: "We believe the soil is subsiding on the embankment supporting the bridge.

"We will remove sections of the road surface next week to investigate in detail and plan how extensive a re-build needs to be done.

"There appear to be badger setts nearby, so we are working with the Ecology team at Essex County Council to ensure that any wildlife are properly protected."
