    Breaking

So that's it - Essex have won their first cricket County Championship title since 1992!

Ryan ten Doeschate's team put themselves on the brink of glory when they trounced Warwickshire by an innings inside three days at Edgbaston.

But after their eighth victory of a remarkable season, Essex had to wait for second-placed Lancashire's failure to win away to Somerset to be confirmed before they could start celebrating the silverware.

And it's been confirmed - Lancashire duly lost by seven wickets at Taunton, and Essex have therefore completed their task with two matches to spare in their first season back in the top flight.

    Huge congratulations!

Keep an eye on BBC Sport for all the reaction.

  17. Stansted boss calls for government to set out airport's visionpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

The boss of Stansted Airport has called on the government to put in place a national aviation strategy to unlock air capacity.

Ken O'Toole says a lot more can be done to improve UK's connectivity with the rest of the world, as the country prepares to leave the UK and at a time when airport capacity is at a premium.

"The UK is going to need to the aviation industry to be at the top of its game over the next 10-15 years," he said.

Mr O'Toole, who was appointed chief executive of the Essex airport last month, says it'll shortly be applying to raise the planning cap to allow it to make full use of Stansted's runway.

To get the most from our airports, he said the joined-up thinking on road, rail and aviation policies should be a priority for the government.

    Quote Message

In the case of Stansted, a key priority is creating the best possible rail links from the airport to London and Cambridge... faster journey times will expand our reach and strengthen our ability to attract the increasing number of long-haul airlines that wish to serve London."

More from Essex batsman Ravi Bopara (see 10:21 entry).

He says the soon-to-be-champions' success is down to a "good all-round performance" rather than any individual.

"We have had Tom Westley come on a long way and play for England, Simon Harmer has been unbelievable and one of our youngsters Jamie Porter has come along with 60-odd wickets, that has been a massive help," Bopara told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I think eight of our batters have got hundreds, it has been a good all-round performance.

"A lot of the lads I have grown up with and with my best mate Ryan ten Doeschate leading the side, it is just nice to be playing cricket with him for this long."

Champions elect Essex have to wait a little longer for mathematical confirmation, but batsman Ravi Bopara says they only started to believe they could win the title halfway through the season.

"We didn't say "let's go out and win it", Bopara told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We just said we'd make our signings and enjoy every day and work hard but halfway through the season we started honestly saying to each other 'look we can win this'.
