    A bit more now on yesterday's fire at a derelict building in Chafford Hundred which caused damage to a nearby supermarket.

    The fire was put out by 19:30 on Tuesday, but two fire engines remained at the site to dampen down hotspots.

    The derelict building was completely destroyed by the fire and the storage area at the back of the Sainsbury's building in Burghley Road has been damaged, but firefighters managed to stop it spreading to the main store.

    An investigation into the cause will be carried out.

    Storm Aileen will continue to bring fairly strong gusts of wind today and the Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning, external for some areas of the region.

    Despite the wind, there will be some sunny or bright spells during the day, although some fairly heavy showers are also due to blow in.

    The wind will gradually ease through the day.

    Turning wet and windy later this evening with gusts of 65-70mph possible in parts of the BBC East region.

    With these sorts of wind speeds, and with trees still in full leaf, branches could come down.

    Rain clearing by the early hours leaving clear skies, but remaining very windy.

    The temperature will dip to 10C (50F)

    Wednesday will have a mixture of more sunny spells and blustery showers with the possibility of hail and thunder and highs of 17C (63F).

    David Jackson has also emailed us on the subject of the fines for drivers caught using the bus and taxi lane under the bridge at Chelmsford railway station.

    He writes: "David White is absolutely right, the signs have been clear for years and drivers have ignored them, now there are more signs and road markings plus cameras which are also signed.

    "If you cannot read or understand signs then don’t be upset if you get rightly fined.

    "Too many drivers think they should be able to break the rules without any chance of being caught, well now, at last, they are being caught."

  15. Theatre group directors pay tribute to Louella Michiepublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    The directors of the Leigh-on-Sea based Tiffany Theatre College, external, have paid tribute to Louella Michie - the daughter of the Holby City actor John Michie who was found dead at the Bestival music festival at the weekend.

    The 25-year-old had been a student at the theatre in her late teens.

    Chriss and Tiffany Campbell-Welch said: "Louella was a very gifted student, a beautiful young lady with a sweet soul who was well-loved by everyone.

    "She had a wonderful ability to light up the room with her smile and make everyone feel happy."

    A 28-year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

  16. Correspondent welcomes fines for drivers in bus lanepublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    Our report on Monday about thousands of drivers being fined for driving in a bus lane in Chelmsford, following the introduction of enforcement cameras, has prompted David White to email us.

    He writes: "Fantastic.

    "It has been NO CARS for years and drivers take no notice of it!

    "So sad that these ignorant people are getting fines, GREAT!! Make them pay, they aren’t blind are they, just complete prats who think they can ignore the law.

    "The more fines the better is what I say, bleed them of their money until they understand road signs."

    The Mein Schiff 3 has docked at the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury as part of a seven-night European voyage.

    It's the largest cruise liner to have visited the terminal on the Thames estuary to date.

  19. World War One aerodrome gets more than £4m of lottery fundingpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    An aerodrome that's been untouched for 60 years is to be turned into a major visitor attraction.

    The National Lottery has granted £4.3m to the Stoke Maries Great War aerodrome, external at Maldon.

    The aerodrome was established by the Royal Flying Corps, external in 1916 and played a pivotal role in defending London and the British mainland from German Zeppelin airships and Gotha bombers.

    Ian Flint, chief executive officer of the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome Trust, said: "For every single person that's every bought a lottery ticket, thank you so much.

    "We're going to have a visitor centre, which is going to be brilliant, we'll going to be able to orientate our visitors when they first get to the site.

    "There's also going to be some major renovation works at three of our accommodation blocks - one of them is going to be turned into a permanent exhibition, showing exactly how the officers used to live in the Great War.

    "The other two are going to be 'fluid' spaces to allow the volunteers, groups, members of the community to come in and use them for everything from temporary exhibitions to educational learning spaces.

    "It's just going to be fantastic."

  20. Curfew keeps Ranger out of Southend gamepublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    Nile Ranger will miss Southend United's League One game against Shrewsbury Town this evening, because of a curfew.

    The striker was released from prison last month, after serving 10 weeks of an eight-month sentence after admitting online banking fraud.

    Southend manager Phil Brown says his electronic tag will mean he misses the 19:45 kick-off in Shrewsbury: "His curfew is 7pm until 7am."

    The Shrewsbury match is likely to be the last game affected by Ranger's curfew, as the tag is due to be removed before Southend's match at Fleetwood on 23 September.
