The home side enjoyed the majority of possession but Nathan Redmond's lob on to the bar on the stroke of half-time was their best moment until Crouch pounced.

The striker's 10th goal of the season arrived when he headed home a Geoff Cameron cross and they deserved the lead after creating openings throughout.

Southampton rallied late on as Jack Butland produced fine saves to deny Steven Davis, James Ward-Prowse and Sofiane Boufal but Claude Puel's side end the campaign without a win in five games at St Mary's.

A week after it was suspended on the orders of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the new chain ferry remains out of action.

A council spokesman said: "It was anticipated that during the first couple of weeks there would be some issues to be ironed out that could not be identified until the vessel was back in service and in full use."

He added the "soft launch" followed an initial sign-off by MCA as well as "a period of relevant tests, commissioning and staff training".

The council is working with the manufacturer and it is hoped the floating bridge will be fully operational "very shortly", he said.

  20. Headington student halls evacuated after kitchen firepublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

Students were evacuated from their halls of residence in Oxford after a kitchen fire over the weekend.

It happened when cooking was left unattended at the halls of residence in Headington in the early hours of Sunday morning, Thames Valley Fire Control Service said.

    Quote Message

The residents of this block were lucky the fire was not more serious, cooking should never be left unattended, it is easy to become distracted and forget to check on it, especially after a night out. If you are hungry after a night out we would urge people to order food rather than to cook, preventing occurrences such as this.”
