She said: "It's quite a relief and an enormous response and I'm very humbled by the support I've received tonight.
"We've had a lot of different people coming into the Labour Party from all walks of life."
She said the Conservatives had used "divisive, negative rhetoric" and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has offered "a different kind of politics".

Turnout in Slough is 65.4%, up from 55.9% in 2015.
We were expecting this to be one of the first results we'd get in Berkshire, but the extra votes look like they may have delayed things.

She stepped down before the election, and the Tories were hoping to do well here. We'll have to wait and see - the result is expected circa 3.30.

Re-elected Bracknell MP Dr Phillip Lee has told us he saw large groups of young people at polling stations earlier today.
"I can only presume that what we were witnessing was this sort of youth movement," the Conservative said.
He added that the high turnout from young people was "not something we detected in advance", and the Tories now need to examine why they are "not appealing to young voters".
Dr Lee said he still thinks Theresa May made the right decision to call the election.
