Work to cut down 33 trees in Reading will begin next week, the borough council announced today.
The council said the trees identified for felling would be replaced.
Deputy council leader Tony Page said: "While it is always with regret the council has to carry out this work, public safety is paramount and we have little option.
“Trees do deteriorate over time and it is particularly sad where the trees to be felled provide significant amenity value to an area.
"In the case of the 16 poplars at Christchurch Meadows and the large black poplar at Kings Meadow, that is certainly the case."

A cancer victim has started a new campaign to encourage people to write letters to friends and family who are suffering from cancer.

He said it helped him hugely as he comes close to becoming cancer free.
Now, he and friend Alison have set up a website hoping to inspire others to do the same.

A judge has described a 17-year-old as a "career drug dealer" as she passed sentence for the stabbing of a man in a Bournemouth street.
The teenager, who cannot be named, was found guilty of wounding with intent and possessing a knife following a trial at Winchester Crown Court which concluded last month.
CCTV shown in court showed the victim walking into a shop with the knife still embedded to a depth of 3.5cm, before he collapsed.
Judge Jane Miller QC said the blade had "missed critical structures in the head by millimetres". She told the teenager: "You are very lucky you did not face a murder charge.
"You are dangerous and lack ability to control yourself." He was given a 12-year custodial sentence.

There's a new update in the long running (and very exciting) debate over the structure of local government in Oxfordshire.
Oxford City, West Oxfordshire and Cherwell councils have submitted their plan to the government.
They want to keep the county's district authorities and create a combined authority where all the council leaders can meet and take decisions.
But Oxfordshire County, Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire councils want to abolish the county's councils and replace them with one authority for the whole of Oxfordshire.
After a bright start to the day, it will get cloudier as the afternoon progresses.
Temperatures will peak at about 21C before falling to 15C overnight.
If you have a great image of Oxfordshire send it to us by email to oxfordshire@bbc.co.uk, or post it on Twitter @bbcoxford or BBC Oxford on Facebook.

A crowdfunding appeal has been launched by two Portsmouth women who are converting a double-decker bus into a fully functioning homeless shelter.
Joanne Vines and Sammy Barcroft masterminded the ambitious project after spending three years working with the homeless as part of their Rucksack Project, which invites people to bring in rucksacks full of food, clothing, bedding and other useful items.
The friends approached Stagecoach, which has offered a disused bus free of charge.
Plans include installing 12 beds with toilet facilities and a kitchen.
Work has already begun and will continue in the coming weeks. It is hoped the shelter will be operational by November, in time for winter.
Once all the work is complete on the conversion, it will be given to a local charity to run.
Ms Barcroft said: "I’m so impressed at how the community have come together to support this project. We’ve got a lot of work to do but the donations and pledges coming in have been amazing."

Just when you thought you could take your mind off the football for just a short period...
The League Cup first round draw has taken place in Thailand, of all places, thanks to the generosity of a sponsor.
The draw doesn't include Premier League teams, so for our neck of the woods here are the ties for Oxford United, Portsmouth and (not to rub salt into the play-off wounds) Reading.
The matches will take place on the week beginning 7 August.
